The North Carolina Democratic Party has formally severed ties with Shelly Headen, a state House candidate whose social media history and a photograph taken at the Dachau concentration camp memorial have turned her into a political liability her own party can no longer carry. According to American Thinker, the state party announced it would drop its support, and the Guilford County Democratic Party followed with a far blunter condemnation.
The photograph at the center of the controversy shows Headen smiling at the Dachau ovens, with a caption reading, “This is where Trump supporters belong.” Dachau was one of the first Nazi concentration camps, and the ovens there are among the most recognizable remnants of the Holocaust’s machinery of death. Posing cheerfully at such a site — regardless of political intent — was, as American Thinker put it, the kind of thing that would sink almost any candidacy on its own.
The Posts Behind the Fallout
But the photo was not an isolated lapse. American Thinker reports a pattern of social media activity that includes a Facebook post asking why some people can see what is happening in the world and others cannot, then suggesting Republicans “need to experience sexual assault so they can experience what Trump’s victims feel.” In a thread on X attributed to a group calling itself Democrats, Republicans, and Independents for Democracy, she wrote that “our only hope is an attack on US Soil… preferably Alabama, Louisiana… where the stupid people live.”
When Kamala Harris became the Democratic nominee, Headen’s response was, per the same reporting: “I’m so excited! Ready for the MAGAs to die off!!” And in another post, she wrote that the damage Trump had done was getting close to surpassing Hitler — spelled “Hilter” in the original — adding that his MAGA following may be more destructive and evil than the Nazis.
American Thinker also notes that at least two 2024 police reports exist in which Headen was apparently accused of battering her husband, who was listed as a victim of domestic assault.
The Party’s Response
The state party’s statement announcing the decision was, according to the outlet, not available online. Party spokesman Sam Lozier offered a measured explanation: “Our responsibility was to determine whether she should continue receiving caucus support, and we acted accordingly.”
The Guilford County Democratic Party, by contrast, issued a statement that pulled no punches, saying it stands firmly for decency, mutual respect, and the core values of the community, and that it unequivocally rejects and condemns the posts. The county party specifically cited language referencing concentration camps, the use of derogatory terms for neurodivergent individuals, and the invocation of political violence, calling all of it completely indefensible and unacceptable.
There is a practical problem, however. The deadline for switching candidates passed weeks ago, so Headen’s name will remain on the ballot whether the party wants it there or not. That has not stopped Democrats from going on the offensive against her Republican opponent, John Blust. In a statement, the party said the situation “does not erase our serious concerns about John Blust’s record or our belief that the voters of House District 62 deserve better representation.”
Doubling Down
Headen herself shows no sign of backing away. Her campaign website remains live, and she offered a statement that American Thinker characterized as a remarkable act of self-comparison: “I’ve sacrificed myself just like Jesus sacrificed himself on the cross, and Martin Luther King and Abraham Lincoln and all the people that put themselves out there to sacrifice for our country.”
The outlet also notes a Reddit post from someone purporting to be her nephew, who wrote that she was fine until she “flipped about 10-12 years ago,” and that she has since cut herself off from family except for social media sniping. According to that account, “she needs some help, and certainly is not fit for office.” The authenticity of that post has not been independently verified.
American Thinker’s J.R. Dunn frames the episode as a case study in what happens when a candidate’s online persona collides with a party’s public brand. The state party’s decision to cut her loose came only after the posts became impossible to ignore — and, as Dunn notes, the party’s concern appeared to focus more on the social media content than on the Dachau photograph itself.
What remains is a candidate with no institutional backing, a ballot slot that cannot be reassigned, and a party now directing its fire at her opponent. For voters in House District 62, the choice in November will include a name their own party has publicly disavowed.
