Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) issued a blunt warning to the Trump administration and the FBI on Tuesday, saying records related to a wave of terminations at the Justice Department and the bureau had better be preserved because congressional investigators intend to scrutinize them.
Appearing on MS NOW’s “The Briefing,” Schiff said his message was aimed not only at FBI Director Kash Patel but at “the lawyers sitting behind him and people watching from the FBI.”
“You damn well better preserve records, because we’re going to be investigating all these hundreds of wrongful terminations, and we’re going to hold you accountable,” Schiff said, according to an account of the interview published by Breitbart News.
Questions About Purges at DOJ and the FBI
The California Democrat tied his warning to testimony from Todd Blanche, whom he questioned about remarks Blanche made at CPAC, the conservative political conference. In those comments, according to Schiff’s description, Blanche said the Justice Department had effectively “cleaned house” of anyone who had worked on prosecutions of Donald Trump, and that Patel had done the same at the FBI.
When Schiff pressed Blanche on the remarks, Blanche responded that he was under an ethical obligation not to involve himself in cases involving his former client, the president, and therefore was not involved in the firings — he was, in his telling, simply stating a fact.
Patel offered a different explanation Tuesday, Schiff said, suggesting that if agents who worked on those investigations had left, it was because they had decided to retire or departed for reasons unrelated to their work on the cases.
“None of it passes the smell test,” Schiff said.
A Warning Aimed at the Bureau
Schiff framed his remarks as a direct message to current FBI personnel, warning that the departures would be the subject of sustained congressional scrutiny and that records connected to them must be kept intact.
His comments add to a running dispute between Democratic lawmakers and the administration over personnel decisions at the two agencies, which have drawn intense attention since Trump returned to office. Schiff, a frequent critic of the president and a member of the Senate, has used committee questioning to press officials on how those decisions were made and who authorized them.
The exchange also reflects a broader fight over documentation — who keeps it, who can review it, and what happens when Congress demands it. Schiff’s warning was explicit that he expects the paper trail to survive.
Whether the administration will comply with any eventual requests, and how the dispute plays out, remains to be seen.
