Director Greta Gerwig is facing a wave of criticism after confirming that Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep will voice Aslan the Lion in her forthcoming Netflix reboot of C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. The news, first reported by Breitbart, has ignited a debate over the source material’s religious symbolism and the character’s traditionally male identity.
According to Breitbart, Gerwig revealed the casting in an interview with Empire magazine, explaining that she sought an actress with a specific set of qualities. “I wanted someone who was profound but not pretentious, who had gravitas but not morose self-seriousness,” Gerwig told Empire. “Someone who could communicate depth and pathos as well as joy and delight. I wanted someone who was older than 70, so there was a wisdom of experience, but who also had the capacity of fresh wonder, like a child. And also to be one of the greatest actors to ever do it. That list is not a long one.”
Streep, a three-time Academy Award winner, is known for her extensive filmography and has been an outspoken figure on various political and social issues. Her selection for the role of Aslan, a character that Lewis explicitly wrote as a male lion and as a representation of Jesus Christ, has drawn immediate backlash from segments of the author’s fanbase.
A Character Rooted in Christian Allegory
C.S. Lewis, a renowned Christian apologist and author, published The Chronicles of Narnia between 1950 and 1956. The series, which begins with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, is widely interpreted as a Christian allegory, with Aslan serving as a direct stand-in for Christ. Lewis himself confirmed this parallel in various letters and essays, describing Aslan’s sacrifice and resurrection as mirrors of the Passion of Christ. The character’s masculinity is therefore not incidental but integral to the allegory, a point critics argue Gerwig’s casting ignores.
Breitbart reports that Gerwig also unveiled the first image of her Aslan, which depicts the lion with multicolored eyes, a mix of feathers and fur, and red stripes on his face. The design, according to the outlet, makes Aslan resemble a mythic griffin rather than a photorealistic lion. A griffin is a creature from ancient mythology, typically combining the body of a lion with the head and wings of an eagle, and has no roots in Christian theology.
The visual choices, combined with the gender-swapped casting, have led some fans to accuse Gerwig of deliberately stripping the Christian underpinnings from Lewis’s work. “C.S. Lewis is rolling in his grave,” one critic reportedly said, capturing the sentiment among those who view the changes as a betrayal of the source material.
Gerwig’s Vision vs. Fan Expectations
Gerwig, who previously directed the blockbuster Barbie, has a track record of reinterpreting established properties through a contemporary lens. Her approach to Narnia appears to continue that trend, prioritizing a broad, artistic vision over strict fidelity to the text. In her Empire interview, she emphasized the intangible qualities she sought in Streep, suggesting a desire to capture a sense of wisdom and wonder that transcends gender.
However, for many longtime fans, the film’s success will hinge on how faithfully it respects Lewis’s original intent. The controversy echoes similar debates in recent years over gender-flipped or race-swapped characters in popular franchises, where studios balance creative license against audience expectations. Netflix has not yet responded to the criticism, and it remains unclear how the film will address Aslan’s gender within the narrative.
As of now, the project is still in development, with no release date announced. The backlash, however, underscores the passionate following that Lewis’s work continues to command more than six decades after his death. Whether Gerwig’s interpretation will win over skeptics or deepen the divide remains to be seen.
