President Donald Trump said Friday that he is barring three major news organizations from the White House effective immediately, announcing the move in a post on his Truth Social platform. According to Breitbart News, the outlets named are CNN, MS NOW — the network formerly known as MSNBC — and Politico.
In the post, Trump attributed the decision to what he described as the outlets’ “constant ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS,” putting the word reporting in quotation marks. He added a line suggesting the list is not final: “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”
A Ban With a Stated List
The announcement singles out three organizations by name. Two are television networks with long-established White House press operations; the third, Politico, is a political news outlet that covers Congress, the administration and campaigns. The president’s post framed the ban as retaliation for coverage he objects to rather than any specific security or access concern.
Trump also used the post to renew a grievance about Politico’s government subscriptions. He wrote that the outlet had received what he called an “illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them ‘alive.'” He closed that passage with “Seems like corruption to me!” No evidence was presented in the post for the characterization.
MS NOW drew a separate jab. Trump noted in parentheses that the network “recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!” The network rebranded as MS NOW, a change the president portrayed in unflattering terms.
A Pattern of Clashes
While a blanket ban on named outlets is an escalation, it does not arrive without a backdrop. Trump has sparred with correspondents from across the press corps during his second term, and some of the friction predates his return to office.
In August, the president called MS NOW White House correspondent Jake Traylor “fake news” and “one of the worst in the business.” The exchange was one of several between the administration and the network’s White House team.
At the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in July, Trump likened CNN’s Kaitlan Collins to transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney, a remark that drew attention well beyond the room. Collins and the president had also had intense exchanges on the campaign trail leading up to the 2024 election.
Politico has featured in its own set of confrontations. In October, when Politico’s Dasha Burns attempted to ask a question, Trump told her, “Politico’s been so wrong about everything. Let’s get somebody else to ask some questions, you mind? Because Politico is fake news.”
The new ban follows that pattern but goes further, cutting off the three outlets from White House access as a category rather than as individual flashpoints with individual reporters.
What It Means for Coverage
A White House ban on specific outlets typically limits those organizations’ ability to have correspondents on the grounds, attend briefings or question the president in formal settings. It does not prevent them from reporting — outlets can still cover the administration through public statements, external interviews and other means — but it changes the terms of daily access.
The president’s phrasing, particularly the promise that “other Fake News Media Outlets” will follow, suggests the list could grow. Which organizations might be next was not specified in the post.
Trump has used the “fake news” label against a wide range of outlets over the years, and his second term has seen repeated public rebukes of individual correspondents. The difference here is the formal, named exclusion announced in a single statement and applied to entire newsrooms.
