Bill Maher pushed back hard Friday night against the suggestion that Democrats have moderated since the last election cycle, turning a segment on HBO’s “Real Time” into a heated exchange with Fox News co-host Jessica Tarlov over whether the party has shed its more polarizing tendencies.
According to clips flagged by Breitbart News, the conversation began with Maher laying out his theory of recent elections: Democrats have paid a price for being “crazy on social issues,” while Trump’s own chaos was offset by a stronger economy — an advantage Maher said the president no longer holds.
Tarlov’s Claim, and the Pushback
Tarlov, who co-hosts both Fox News Channel’s “The Five” and the “Raging Moderates” podcast, responded with a straightforward assertion: “And we’re less crazy.”
Maher seemed to assume she was joking. When he asked whether she was being sarcastic, Tarlov said she wasn’t, prompting Maher to press again: “You think we’re less crazy?”
Tarlov offered a more limited version of her argument, conceding the party’s internal instincts may not have changed but arguing that its public messaging has. She said Democrats are at least “talking about the economy and corruption and not talking about woke” when they go out and give speeches.
That framing drew a quick retort from Manhattan Institute senior fellow and City Journal contributing editor Chris Rufo, who suggested the shift was purely performative. “They’re wearing Carhartts and pretending to be less crazy,” Rufo said. “That’s what’s happening.”
Maher Points to DSA Candidates
Maher wasn’t buying the moderation argument either. He pointed to the party’s left flank, describing some Democratic candidates as “Communists who think the Islamists are the good guys” and asking Tarlov whether she had been following the Democratic Socialists of America.
Tarlov said she was well aware of the group. Maher then returned to his broader point, saying the party hasn’t walked back its positions on gender issues and is instead “doubling down.”
“Okay, they’re not less crazy,” Maher said. “And they’re not recanting any of that crazy gender stuff. They’re doubling down. Anyway, the point is, this election is not about them.”
The exchange did produce one point of agreement later in the segment: Tarlov said DSA candidates are “nuts.”
An Ongoing Argument on the Left and Center
The back-and-forth reflects a debate that has run through Democratic circles since the party’s recent losses — whether to tack toward the center on cultural issues or hold firm on progressive priorities. Maher, who has spent years criticizing what he calls the excesses of his own side, has been one of the more prominent voices arguing that the party’s brand is still weighed down by its most vocal activists.
His comment that “this election is not about them” suggests he sees the current cycle turning on other factors — a nod to his earlier framing that elections have often come down to a choice between Democratic social-issue politics and Republican economic performance.
The clip circulated quickly online, with critics of the party seizing on Maher’s line that Democrats are “doubling down” and supporters of Tarlov’s position noting her argument was about presentation rather than substance.
Representatives for Maher, Tarlov and HBO did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
