A 17-year-old high school student in northern Brazil is accused of stabbing her math teacher inside a classroom, allegedly telling an officer that she attacked the instructor because she did not like her, according to reporting by the New York Post.
The incident took place on September 11 at Dr. Gerson dos Santos State School in Cametá, a municipality in the state of Pará, shortly after a math exam was returned to students. The teacher was identified as Betânia de Almeida.
Video shows a struggle at the teacher’s desk
Footage of the incident shows the teen standing beside the desk where de Almeida was seated. Moments later, the girl appears to pull a knife from her pocket and lunge toward the teacher.
The two struggled, and de Almeida fell to the ground as she tried to wrest the knife away. She eventually broke free and ran out of the classroom door. The student then placed the knife beneath her shirt and left the room, according to the video account.
The teacher was reportedly stabbed once and was arrested—no, the student was arrested at the scene. Officers said she told them she targeted the instructor because she disliked her.
Teacher treated and discharged
De Almeida was taken to Cametá Regional Hospital, where she received stitches and was discharged the same day, the school said. A CT scan showed the stab wound did not affect any of her organs.
A lawyer told the Post that the teenager will likely face an infraction comparable to attempted homicide. Because she is a minor under Brazilian law, however, she cannot be held criminally liable in the same way an adult would be.
Wider concerns about school violence in Brazil
The attack in Cametá adds to a broader pattern of violent episodes at Brazilian schools that authorities have been grappling with in recent years. In 2023, El Pais reported that government leaders described the situation as an “epidemic” of such incidents.
At that time, alarm had spread after a 25-year-old man killed four children between the ages of five and seven with a bladed weapon in Blumenau, in southern Brazil. Days earlier, a 13-year-old had stabbed a teacher to death and injured four other people at a school in São Paulo. Those back-to-back tragedies prompted concern among families and officials, who were also worried about the spread of false online warnings about new attacks.
Separately, in May of that year, a 13-year-old was arrested following a shooting on a school campus that killed two staff members, according to Sky News.
The Cametá case remains under investigation, with the student’s legal status governed by Brazil’s juvenile justice system rather than its criminal courts.
