A French military chaplain has been reprimanded and now faces a full disciplinary procedure after a secretly recorded sermon in which he warned that France could be “replaced” by newcomers, according to reporting by Breitbart News. The footage, published Friday by the satirical newspaper Le Canard Enchaîné, has ignited a political firestorm, drawing condemnation from the political left and prompting action from the government of President Emmanuel Macron.
The sermon was delivered on October 7, 2025, at the cathedral in Carcassonne, a fortified city in southern France, during a service marking the feast of Saint Michael, the patron saint of paratroopers. The chaplain was addressing soldiers of the 3rd Marine Infantry Parachute Regiment, who are garrisoned in the city. In the recording, he called on those present to look at the war memorial outside the church, bearing the names of those who fell defending France, and warned that the country risked losing its heritage.
A Sermon and Its Aftermath
According to Breitbart’s account, the chaplain told the congregation that France was now run by “incompetents” — characterized as vegetarian, moralising ideologues — rather than the “knights” who built its basilicas, cathedrals, homes, and castles. He urged the soldiers to have the courage to speak out, warning that otherwise “beautiful France will be mocked, and others will take our place.” The remark drew laughter from the assembled soldiers. He continued by invoking the “law of the jungle,” telling the troops that “others will take the place of our values, of freedom of speech, of equality, and of the brotherhood of this culture, this society,” because “nature abhors a vacuum.”
The chaplain also said he felt comfortable speaking freely because no cameras were present. In fact, a surreptitious recording was being made, and its release on Friday triggered immediate outrage from left-wing politicians, who demanded action against both the priest and the soldiers who laughed.
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the hard-left leader of La France Insoumise, called the speech racist and seditious, and implied that the speaker should be imprisoned. He also said the soldiers who laughed and did not walk out should be identified and “neutralised” from the military, according to Le Figaro. Thomas Portes, an LFI parliamentarian, said the sermon aligned with the “Great Replacement theory” and blamed it on Carcassonne having a mayor from the National Rally. However, the city had not yet elected its new right-wing populist mayor when the video was captured last year, though the now-mayor was reportedly present in the front row.
Government Response
Since the footage was published, the French government has identified the chaplain, called the sermon “inappropriate,” and said the officer has received an “official reprimand.” The Minister for the Armed Forces in Macron’s government said the matter would be taken further, with a full disciplinary procedure now being sought.
The strong response from the French state may reflect long-standing concerns about sympathy for traditional Catholic France and populist-right leader Marine Le Pen among the troops. In 2016, a highly decorated French general was stripped of his position for anti-mass-migration activism. In 2018, a group of ten generals, an admiral, and a former defence minister broke ranks to call Macron a “traitor” for backing mass migration. And in 2021, another general spoke of the risk of “civil war.”

The phrase “Great Replacement” was coined by French novelist Renaud Camus, who told Breitbart News in 2023 that it is not a theory but a “dire and sinister fact.” He argued that his critics would struggle with the idea if they had read his books. Camus has described demographic change as “the change of people and civilisation for the sake of the industry of man.” The term is widely dismissed as a conspiracy theory by the left, which insists that white Europeans are not being substituted by migrant arrivals.
The incident has amplified attention on Carcassonne, which recently elected a National Rally mayor, and has become a flashpoint in France’s broader debate over immigration, identity, and the military’s role in society.
