Madonna Takes Artist of the Year as Taylor Swift Sweeps MTV VMAs With Dolly Parton Tribute

Madonna and Taylor Swift split the night’s biggest honors at the MTV Video Music Awards, an evening hosted by Snoop Dogg at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater that was shadowed by the death of country legend Dolly Parton just one month earlier.

Madonna claimed Artist of the Year, beating out Swift along with Ariana Grande, Bruno Mars, Morgan Wallen and Sabrina Carpenter, according to Breitbart’s account of the ceremony. The win came during a night in which the singer was nominated in 11 categories, and it followed a performance that opened the show — her first live VMAs set in 23 years.

A Queen of Pop Return, and a New Collaboration

Snoop Dogg, hosting the proceedings, introduced Madonna before she launched into “Bring Your Love,” her collaboration with Carpenter. The performance began with Madonna lying atop a black grand piano while Carpenter played, then shifted into a choreographed dance routine. Not long after, the pair took home Best Collaboration for the song — the first of Madonna’s awards on the night.

Swift, meanwhile, won Video of the Year for a clip that outdistanced a competitive field including Grande’s “hate that i made you love me,” Mars’ “I Just Might,” GENER8ION’s “STORM” starring Yung Lean, Madonna’s “Confessions II – The Film” and Carpenter’s “Tears.” She had entered the night with nine nominations, while Grande and Carpenter each had seven.

Accepting the award, Swift dedicated it to Parton, who died last month, calling her “the ultimate showgirl” and saying, “We were all very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton.”

Swift also became the first recipient of MTV’s Artist Director Honors, a new recognition for “groundbreaking music artists whose work behind the camera has expanded the possibilities of music video and advanced the art of visual storytelling.” In another first for the telecast, she premiered the video for her new single “Patient Zero” during the ceremony. Swift directed the video, which stars Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson and features cinematography by Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki.

A Night of Tributes to Dolly Parton

One of the evening’s most affecting moments came when country star Kacey Musgraves honored Parton with a rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” roughly a month after the country superstar’s death. Musgraves, a friend and admirer of Parton who was nominated in the Best Country category for “Dry Spell,” had also performed a tribute to her at an Aug. 28 concert in Boston.

The ceremony spread its remaining major awards across a wide field. Best New Artist of the Year went to 21-year-old British singer-songwriter Sienna Spiro, whose powerful, soulful voice and persona draw on the spirit of 1960s girl groups. Best Pop went to LISA for “Dream” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, topping a category that included Grande’s “hate that i made you love me,” Charli xcx’s “SS26,” Olivia Rodrigo’s “drop dead,” Carpenter’s “House Tour,” Tate McRae’s “Nobody’s Girl” and Swift’s “The Fate of Ophelia.” South Korean boy band BTS took Song of the Year for “Swim.”

Taken together, the results handed Madonna the night’s top individual prize while leaving Swift with a landmark haul of institutional firsts — a new honorary award and a world-premiere slot — that underscored her dual role as both a marquee performer and a director shaping the visual side of the medium.

The show’s structure reflected that balance. Madonna’s opening number gave the telecast its nostalgia and spectacle, a reminder of her long history with the network’s signature awards, while Swift’s premieres and honors pointed to where MTV is placing its bets on the artist-as-filmmaker. In between, the Parton tributes supplied the emotional throughline, with two of the night’s most prominent women — one a pop elder statesman, the other its reigning commercial force — bookending an evening that otherwise belonged to a broad and fragmented field of winners.

For Madonna, the Artist of the Year trophy arrived alongside a sprawling slate of nominations that made her a constant presence throughout the broadcast. For Swift, the Video of the Year win added to a resume that now includes recognition for work done behind the camera as well as in front of it — a distinction MTV created specifically to acknowledge artists who have pushed music video toward something closer to short film.

The ceremony’s outcome left no single artist with a clean sweep, but it did produce a clear narrative: a veteran pop star reintroduced to the VMAs stage after more than two decades away, and a younger superstar using the same stage to expand what the format can be. Between them, the night’s biggest prizes, premieres and tributes all landed within a few hours of one another — a compressed burst of pop-culture moments that the show’s producers will likely be replaying for some time.
