Transgender Teen Julia Egler Gets 50 Years After Plea Deal in Mother's Killing

An 18-year-old Florida resident has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the 2024 shooting deaths of her mother and her mother’s boyfriend, according to reporting from Breitbart News and other outlets.

Julia Egler, a biological female transitioning to male, accepted a plea deal Friday that resolved the case without a trial. The sentence was handed down in connection with the killings of 38-year-old Kelly McCollom, Egler’s mother, and 22-year-old Matthew Szejnrok, McCollom’s boyfriend.

FOX 35 Orlando reported that Egler pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, a move that allowed her to avoid both a trial and a potential life sentence. The plea agreement brought an end to a case that had drawn attention because of the circumstances surrounding the shootings.

Details of the Shooting

The New York Post reported that both victims were shot to death with a .38 Special revolver inside the Florida home. Following the shootings, the scene was staged to resemble a burglary, according to the Post.

Citing an affidavit, the Post reported that Szejnrok survived the initial shooting. Egler then stabbed him repeatedly until he asked her to shoot him again to end his suffering, the affidavit stated.

The affidavit described a sequence of events in which the initial gunfire did not immediately kill Szejnrok, and Egler used a knife before firing a second fatal shot at his request.

Egler’s alleged motive was outlined in the same affidavit. She reportedly did not approve of her mother dating someone so young, and the tension escalated into rage when her mother disapproved of her transitioning to male.

The court heard that Egler had expressed remorse for her actions. “I was just a kid who made a bad decision,” she told the court, according to the reporting. “The gun just happened to be in here. I didn’t plan what I did. I just did it.”

She added, “I regret my decision every day. I am haunted with grief day and night, even in my nightmare — I still see their faces.”
