The co-pilot aboard the Learjet 60 that crashed in Palm Beach County, Florida, on Sunday has been identified as a young aviator who earned her pilot’s license before she could even drive a car.
Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, was confirmed by her family as the co-pilot of the aircraft that went down while traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. All nine people aboard the jet were killed in the crash.
Her mother, Camila, and stepfather spoke to the New York Post about the young woman who had been working as a commercial pilot for several months. According to her stepfather, Filgueiras had logged 1,300 hours of flying experience.
A Dream Realized Too Soon
In a heartbreaking interview, Camila expressed the conflicting emotions of supporting her daughter’s passion while harboring fears about its dangers.
“I wanted her to live her dream, but I knew that her dream was going to be the thing that would take her away from me,” Camila told the Post. “I knew that a plane was gonna take her away from me. I always knew it, but I was so proud of her. I know she was living her dream.”
Video footage captured the horrifying moment the aircraft slammed into the pavement and erupted into a massive fireball. Emergency crews rushed to the scene, where the impact left a significant crater in the ground.
Terrifying Final Moments
Air traffic control audio reportedly recorded screaming in the moments before the crash. According to the New York Post, the jet went into a nosedive, plummeting at a rate of 20,000 feet per minute before striking the ground.
Text messages sent by Filgueiras to her boyfriend just minutes before the disaster revealed the crew was experiencing turbulence and ice conditions.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy addressed the tragedy on social media Sunday, calling it a “horrific tragedy” and stating that federal authorities were investigating the incident.
“Please join me in praying for the families and loved ones of those we lost,” Duffy wrote, adding that the FAA and Department of Transportation were closely monitoring the crash and would provide updates as more information became available.
Young Pilot Made Headlines Before
The Palm Beach County native had previously garnered local media attention when she obtained her private pilot’s license at just 17 years old in October 2023. Remarkably, she achieved this milestone before she had even received her driver’s license.
Her early accomplishment marked the beginning of what appeared to be a promising career in aviation, cut tragically short just three years later.
Video from the crash site showed neighbors gathering near the location as sirens wailed in the background. The scale of the destruction was evident in footage showing the crater left by the impact and the charred remains of the aircraft.
The identities of the eight other victims have not yet been publicly released as authorities continue their investigation into the cause of the crash. Federal investigators will examine multiple factors, including weather conditions, mechanical issues, and cockpit recordings to determine what led to the fatal nosedive.
The loss of Filgueiras represents not just a personal tragedy for her family, but the end of a young life dedicated to pursuing a passion for flight that began in her teenage years.
