A Miami County, Ohio, jury needed only two hours to convict Caleb Flynn, a former “American Idol” contestant and pastor, of aggravated murder in the death of his 37-year-old wife Ashley, according to The Daily Wire. Flynn, 40, now faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole for what prosecutors described as the bedside execution of his wife while their two young daughters slept in the next room.
The verdict, delivered Tuesday, closes a case that drew national attention both for Flynn’s brief turn on the singing competition more than a decade ago and for the grisly details that emerged at trial: a husband who told his mistress he wanted his wife dead, a staged break-in, and a 911 call that prosecutors characterized as performance.
A staged break-in and a tearful 911 call
The murder took place early on February 16 inside the couple’s Tipp City, Ohio, home. Flynn called 911 claiming an intruder had entered the garage and shot Ashley. Responding officers’ body cameras captured him sobbing and asking, “Is she gone, sir?”

But FBI agents testified that there were no pry marks outside the door, and that the only gouges in the door frame were made from the inside — evidence that undermined Flynn’s account of a forced entry. Prosecutors argued that Flynn shot his wife twice in the back of the head while she was asleep, then tried to make the scene look like a burglary gone wrong.
During the trial, prosecutors painted Flynn as a man desperate to start a new life with his mistress, 24-year-old church intern Alleigha Botner. She told the jury, “I hate him,” before reading from a series of text messages exchanged during their 18-month affair.
The messages, presented as evidence, revealed Flynn’s hostility toward his wife. He referred to her with slurs including “douche,” “spawn of Satan,” and a profanity. In March 2025, after Botner asked, “What can I do?” Flynn replied, “Kill her.” In August 2025, he wrote that he had been up until 4 a.m. “literally trying to think of ways to kill her and not go to jail.” Another message read: “If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat.”

Botner reportedly set deadline after deadline urging Flynn to leave his wife. The night before Ashley was killed, he sent final messages to his mistress: “It’s happening,” “about to be free,” and a promise that February 16 would be “a day I never forget.”
Defense blames mistress; prosecutors reject claim
Flynn’s defense lawyers attempted to shift responsibility to Botner, pointing out that she dropped her phone in the ocean and lost her laptop weeks before the murder. But Ring camera footage proved she was at home at the time of the killing, according to The Daily Wire.
Prosecutors also said Flynn tried to claim he didn’t want to lose his salary or his church job, an argument that drew skepticism from the state. In closing arguments, prosecutor Paul Watkins told the jury: “He had a lawful way to leave, but he was too greedy. People lie. Evidence doesn’t.”

Ashley’s sister Kayla testified about the couple’s two daughters discovering their father’s affair, saying the girls were “mostly brokenhearted for Mommy.”
“They were shocked, they were upset for their mom because they said, ‘She loved daddy more than anyone else in life. So why did Daddy not love her as much?'” Kayla told the court, per The Daily Wire.
Sentencing set for October
Flynn is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, October 5. The aggravated murder conviction carries a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole.
Outside the courtroom, Ashley’s family expressed gratitude for the verdict. Watkins urged the public to forget Flynn and remember his victim.
“This world would be a much better place if all of us in it lived like Ashley,” Watkins said.
Flynn first drew attention in 2013 during an “American Idol” audition, where he serenaded national TV audiences and gushed about his “pretty” bride, remarking that she would look like Carrie Underwood if she dyed her hair. That image of a smitten husband stood in stark contrast to the portrait prosecutors presented at trial: a man who, in the words of the state’s evidence, spent months plotting to kill the woman he had once publicly praised.
