Netflix is laying off approximately 1,000 employees โ about 6% of its workforce โ in its biggest round of job cuts since 2022, according to a report Wednesday from The Wall Street Journal. The cuts are concentrated in the company’s product, technology, legal, and human-resources divisions, the Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
In an email to staff, co-CEOs Greg Peters and Ted Sarandos framed the decision as a matter of focus rather than retreat. “Our missionโto entertain the worldโis ambitious, and delivering on it requires us to be disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources,” they wrote. The pair said the company was “making focused choices across the business so we can keep delivering for our members, partners, employees and investors.”
Peters and Sarandos also told employees that Netflix remains on track to meet its full-year forecast and intends to “continue to invest aggressively in high-impact areas,” suggesting the reductions are a reallocation of resources rather than a sign of financial distress.

A Shifting Competitive Landscape
The layoffs arrive at a moment of significant transition for the streaming giant. Earlier this summer, Netflix began exploring new ways to boost subscriber engagement โ including adding live channels and bundling with rival services such as NBCUniversal’s Peacock.
At the same time, free, ad-supported streaming platforms like Tubi (owned by Fox Corp.) and The Roku Channel have intensified competition for viewers’ attention, even as Netflix has steadily raised its own subscription prices. The company’s standard ad-free plan climbed from $13.99 per month in late 2020 to $19.99 in 2026, while the premium tier jumped from $17.99 to $26.99 over the same period.
When Netflix announced its most recent price increase in March, the company defended the move. “Our approach remains the same: We continue offering a range of prices and plans to meet a variety of needs,” it said in a statement at the time.

Beyond price hikes, Netflix has also cracked down on account sharing between households. Users outside an account holder’s household must now have their own account or be added as a paid extra member on an eligible plan.
Fallout from the Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger
The layoffs come just eight days after Paramount Skydance completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6. Netflix had withdrawn from the bidding for Warner Bros. Discovery in February after declining to match Paramount’s higher offer.
The newly merged entity now brings together a sprawling portfolio of media assets, including Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures, CBS, CNN, HBO, HBO Max, Paramount+, MTV, and TNT. That consolidation creates a competitor with a deep bench of content and distribution muscle, potentially reshaping the balance of power in an already crowded streaming market.

Netflix’s decision to step back from the Warner Bros. Discovery pursuit โ and now to trim its own ranks โ suggests a strategic pivot toward efficiency and targeted investment rather than expansion by acquisition.
What Comes Next
For the roughly 1,000 employees affected, the cuts represent a sharp disruption. The layoffs are the largest at Netflix since 2022, when the company also shed hundreds of jobs amid slowing subscriber growth. Whether this round signals a broader course correction or a one-time adjustment remains to be seen.
Netflix has not publicly commented beyond the internal email. The company’s next earnings report will offer the clearest picture of whether the cost-cutting measures translate into improved margins or signal deeper challenges ahead.
For now, the message from leadership is one of continued ambition โ just with a narrower focus. As Peters and Sarandos put it, the goal is to keep delivering for members, partners, employees, and investors alike, even as the company reshapes its workforce to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving entertainment landscape.
