Jay-Z Reportedly Picks Himself to Headline Super Bowl LXI Halftime at SoFi Stadium

A Puck report says the Roc Nation founder, who has curated the NFL's halftime show since 2019, will finally take the stage himself in Los Angeles on Feb. 14, 2027.

Jay-Z Reportedly Picks Himself to Headline Super Bowl LXI Halftime at SoFi Stadium

Jay-Z has spent seven years choosing who performs on the NFL’s biggest musical stage. According to a new report, he has now chosen himself.

Puck reported that the Roc Nation founder will headline the Super Bowl LXI halftime show when the game lands at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Feb. 14, 2027. Breitbart News flagged the report.

If the Puck account holds, it would be the first Super Bowl performance of Jay-Z’s career — a striking gap for an artist of his stature, and one that has fueled years of speculation about whether the man picking the acts would ever pick his own name.

A partnership that put Roc Nation in charge

The NFL brought Jay-Z and Roc Nation in to produce the halftime show in 2019, a period when the league was under sustained criticism over player protests and accusations of racism. The arrangement was renewed in 2024 and runs through 2029, giving Roc Nation broad authority over one of the most-watched musical broadcasts in the world.

That authority has made Jay-Z a gatekeeper for pop and hip-hop’s biggest names, and it has made each annual announcement a subject of intense guesswork. Earlier reporting on the 2027 show had him weighing a slate that included Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber, according to the Puck account. The new report suggests he has set those options aside in favor of taking the spotlight personally.

A performer still filling stadiums — without new music

Jay-Z has not released a studio album since 2017’s 4:44, which went double-platinum. But he has hardly been idle on stage. He wrapped a 2026 concert tour this year, and his two July shows at Yankee Stadium sold out and brought in $42 million in ticket sales, per the report. A sold-out Paris date in September reportedly earned him a $12 million payday.

Those numbers offer a case for the booking on commercial grounds alone: a proven draw, in a venue down the road from his own industry footprint, on a date that falls on Valentine’s Day weekend and the Presidents’ Day holiday.

Halftime politics never stay in the past

Roc Nation’s stewardship has not been without controversy, and the 2027 announcement lands in the middle of that argument. Jay-Z’s selection of Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny for the previous show drew heavy blowback, particularly after Bad Bunny said he would not perform in English. Conservative activist group TPUSA sponsored a rival halftime broadcast that drew millions of viewers, and Nielsen reported that the NFL lost 39 percent of its audience during Bad Bunny’s performance, according to the Breitbart account.

Those ratings and the surrounding fight over the show’s direction are likely to shape how a Jay-Z headlining set is received — both as a musical event and as a statement about who the league’s halftime stage is for.

What the league has not said

Neither the NFL nor Roc Nation has confirmed the Puck report, and halftime headliners are typically unveiled through an official announcement, often with a promotional trailer. Until that happens, the Jay-Z selection remains reported rather than official.

The game itself is set: Super Bowl LXI will be broadcast on Disney-owned ESPN and ABC, and streamed on the ESPN app and Disney+. Kickoff is Feb. 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium.

For now, the most consequential detail is the simplest one. The person who has run the halftime show since 2019 is reportedly ready to stand in front of it.
