President Trump turned a viral photo of Marco Rubio looking less than thrilled into a gold-framed birthday gift, complete with signatures from the president and White House staff.

Trump Signs Gold-Framed 'Rubio Realizing' Meme Collage for Secretary of State's 55th Birthday

President Donald Trump turned a long-running internet joke into a birthday gift for Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who turned 55 on May 28. The gesture, which was shared on social media by NBC News reporter Marc Caputo, shows a gold-framed collage of dozens of variations of the so-called ‘Rubio realizing’ meme, signed by Trump and other White House staffers.

The original photo, taken during an Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in February 2025, shows Rubio slouched on a couch with an expression that suggests he’s not exactly thrilled with how things are going. The image quickly became a template for hundreds of memes, often with captions imagining Rubio learning about yet another new job assignment — a running joke given that Trump has tasked him with multiple roles, including acting national security adviser, acting administrator of USAID, and acting archivist of the National Archives and Records Administration.

According to the post from Caputo, the collage features the un-doctored original photo in the center, with Trump’s signature scrawled across it along with the message, ‘YOU ARE GREAT!’ The other 68 images in the frame each show a different meme version of the original photo, and they all bear the signatures of other White House staffers.

A Photo Rubio Initially Disliked

Rubio has previously said he didn’t like the picture when it was first taken. During an appearance on Lara Trump’s Fox News show ‘My View,’ he explained that the particular couch, without a pillow, often caused people to sink lower than they might otherwise. But once the photo took on a life of its own, it grew on him. ‘It turned into this other thing … and it’s funny,’ he said.

The birthday gift has drawn attention not just for its humor but for the personal touch — a president spending time on a meme collage for a Cabinet member suggests a lighter side to their working relationship. The White House did not immediately issue an official statement about the gift, but the social media post from Caputo confirmed its existence.

Rubio’s multiple roles have been a subject of frequent speculation and humor, with each new vacancy prompting guesses about whether the Secretary of State would be tapped again. The meme, in many ways, became a shorthand for that running joke — and now, a birthday keepsake.
