86-Year-Old Sailor and Dog Rescued After 2 Months Lost at Sea

An 86-year-old sailor and his dog were dramatically rescued from their disabled sailboat after spending two months adrift in the Pacific Ocean, hundreds of miles off the California coast. The octogenarian and his canine companion had set sail from Oregon in August but vanished after their last known contact on August 20.

Disappearance Sparks Search

The sailor, whose identity has not been released, was attempting a 5,000-mile journey from Astoria, Oregon, to American Samoa aboard his vessel, the Willow Wind. When he failed to arrive by late October, authorities launched a search operation after being alerted by concerned parties.

Dramatic Rescue at Sea

The breakthrough came on October 27 when the U.S. Coast Guard received an emergency beacon alert from the sailboat. Aircrews from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento located the disabled vessel about 460 miles off San Diego. A commercial cargo ship, the Grand Onion, reached the sailboat the following morning but faced challenges in the rough seas.

“The sails on the senior mariner’s boat were disabled, and the seas were too rough to safely remove the pair from the boat,” the Coast Guard reported. After a day-long effort, the crew of the Grand Onion successfully transferred the sailor and his dog to their vessel.

Medical Evaluation and Recovery

A Coast Guard helicopter later airlifted the pair about 170 miles west of Ventura, California. Medical personnel found the elderly sailor weak and with difficulty walking but without major injuries. His dog was reported to be in good condition.

“We are grateful to the merchant mariners and Coast Guard crews whose coordinated efforts brought this search to a successful conclusion,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Jason Nguyen, Southwest District command center chief.

Authorities emphasized the importance of proper emergency equipment and voyage planning for all mariners. The disabled Willow Wind was left adrift at sea following the rescue.
