Garcia: Impeaching Trump ‘Has to Be on the Table’ if Democrats Win House

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) said Saturday that impeaching President Donald Trump is on the table if Democrats win back the House in the midterm elections, responding to a recent executive privilege memo that he described as a threat to government transparency.

In an interview on MS NOW’s “Connect” with host Jacob Soboroff, Garcia was asked how the memo—which he said expands executive privilege—could hinder Democratic investigations should the party retake control of Congress in November.

Garcia: Memo ‘Shields’ Trump from Accountability

“The American public really has to understand what this memo is actually saying. And I don’t think people get how dangerous this actually is,” Garcia said. He pointed to the role of Todd Blanche, one of the president’s attorneys, whose early actions, according to Garcia, were aimed at shielding Trump from any conversations with anyone the president views as an advisor.

“Some are then claiming this executive privilege so that the public can’t get access to important government documents, conversations, memos,” Garcia added.

Impeachment Always ‘On the Table’

When Soboroff pressed Garcia directly on whether impeachment is a realistic avenue for accountability, Garcia did not hedge. “I think impeachment always has to be on the table,” he said. “But I think we should be clear that Donald Trump does commit impeachable offenses weekly.”

The remarks come amid ongoing Democratic scrutiny of the administration’s use of executive privilege, which has become a flashpoint in the debate over congressional oversight. Garcia’s comments signal that, should Democrats secure a majority, impeachment could be a central part of their strategy—though he stopped short of outlining specific articles of impeachment.

The interview adds to a growing chorus of Democratic lawmakers who have floated impeachment as a tool to check the president, though the political viability of such a move remains uncertain. Republicans have dismissed such talk as a distraction from what they see as the administration’s legislative wins.

Garcia, a first-term congressman from California, has been vocal in his criticism of Trump and has previously called for greater accountability in the executive branch. His latest comments underscore the tense partisan atmosphere ahead of the midterms, with control of both chambers of Congress hanging in the balance.
