When the new Congress convenes in January, it will include at least five members of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) who ran on platforms advocating for radical policy shifts—from abolishing ICE to implementing Medicare for All and dismantling capitalist structures.
Who Are the New DSA Lawmakers?
Darializa Avila-Chevalier (NY-13), a community organizer and public defender investigator, unseated an incumbent Democrat in a deep-blue Harlem and Bronx district. She has called for abolishing police, eliminating borders, and seizing private property, while her platform includes universal basic income and government-funded gender-affirming care.

Melat Kiros (CO-01), an Ethiopian immigrant, won Denver’s seat with 78% of the vote. She supports a federal “Trans bill of rights,” universal childcare, and has argued socialism aligns with the Declaration of Independence. She faced backlash for calling 9/11 “inevitable” due to U.S. foreign policy.
Donavan McKinney (MI-13), backed by Bernie Sanders, won a Detroit-area seat with 76% of the vote. He advocates for abolishing billionaires, free housing, and taxpayer-funded abortions, while opposing Israel.

Chris Rabb (PA-03), a Philadelphia progressive, wants “national grocery stores,” reparations, and the abolition of ICE—which he calls “concentration camps.” He has vowed to “burn the clubhouse down” regarding political power structures.
Claire Valdez (NY-07), New York’s first Mexican American representative, pledged to bring Mexico’s “fight against imperialism” to Congress. Her agenda includes universal rent control and defunding immigration enforcement.

Controversial Rhetoric and Policy Goals
Several of the incoming lawmakers have faced scrutiny for past statements. Avila-Chevalier’s deleted tweets included calling the U.S. “a f**king disgrace” and Biden a “war criminal,” while Kiros drew ire for her 9/11 remarks. Valdez’s Independence Day post contrasted sharply with her celebratory message for Mexico’s national holiday.
Their collective platform pushes far-left policies: abolishing ICE, Medicare for All, Green New Deal investments, and wealth redistribution. Rabb and McKinney have explicitly called for eliminating billionaires, while Valdez and Avila-Chevalier frame their goals as “liberation” from capitalist systems.
Broader Left-Wing Gains
Beyond the DSA, other progressive candidates notched wins. Former DSA member William Lawrence flipped a Michigan GOP seat, while Abdul El-Sayed and Troy Jackson won Senate races in Michigan and Maine, signaling a growing leftward shift in the Democratic Party.
