DSA-Backed Socialists Win Key Congressional Seats as GOP Suffers Midterm Losses

While Republicans faced midterm defeats, several Democratic Socialists of America-backed candidates secured congressional victories, fueling concerns about their progressive agendas.

DSA-Backed Socialists Win Key Congressional Seats as GOP Suffers Midterm Losses

The 2026 midterms dealt heavy blows to Republicans, with voters widely rejecting Trump-aligned incumbents. But amid the GOP’s losses, another shift emerged—several Democratic Socialists of America (DSA)-endorsed candidates won congressional seats, injecting more progressive voices into the legislature.

Meet the New Socialist Lawmakers

Darializa Avila Chevalier, a DSA-backed candidate, won New York’s 13th District after ousting longtime Democratic Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the primary. A former Columbia University activist, Chevalier campaigned on Medicare for All, universal basic income, and defunding police and prisons.

In Colorado’s 1st District, Melat Kiros unseated 15-term Rep. Diana DeGette. Kiros, an Ethiopian-born socialist, has previously drawn controversy for remarks justifying 9/11 and supports abolishing ICE and implementing national rent control.

Claire Valdez, a union organizer and NYC-DSA member, won New York’s 7th District, running on universal healthcare, citizenship for undocumented immigrants, and ending U.S. military aid to Israel.

Elsewhere, Pennsylvania State Rep. Chris Rabb (D-PA) won an open Philadelphia-area seat, while Michigan’s 13th District elected DSA-favored Donavan McKinney, who supports Palestinian statehood and corporate money bans in politics.

Expanding the Squad’s Influence

The new lawmakers will join existing progressive firebrands like Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib, further boosting the Democratic Party’s left flank. Michigan also elected Abdulrahman El-Sayed, a Muslim American progressive, to the Senate. Though he denies being a socialist, his platform aligns closely with DSA priorities.

Critics argue these candidates’ policies—such as wealth redistribution, open borders, and defunding law enforcement—mirror failed socialist experiments abroad. Supporters, however, see them as champions of working-class Americans left behind by capitalism.

Their victories signal a growing appetite for bold progressive reforms, even as Republicans warn of a socialist takeover. With these new voices in Congress, the political battle between the left and right is set to intensify.
