Former President Trump hints at strong Democratic candidates for 2028 while teasing GOP's 'great bench' of potential successors in Fox News interview.

Trump Warns of 'Formidable' 2028 Democratic Contenders — But Won't Name Names

Former President Donald Trump raised eyebrows Wednesday by suggesting Democrats have “very formidable, talented” potential presidential candidates waiting in the wings for 2028 — while pointedly refusing to identify who might pose the greatest threat to Republicans.

In a Fox News interview with Bret Baier and Martha MacCallum, Trump acknowledged the Democratic bench could be stronger than many realize. “I actually know some that I think would be formidable, but I don’t want to put them in play,” Trump said. “People aren’t even thinking about them.”

GOP’s Future Faces

The former president also weighed in on his own party’s future leadership, name-dropping Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as potential Republican standard-bearers when he becomes term-limited in 2028. “We have a great bench,” Trump said. “We have a great group of talented people that I think would do a very good job.”

Trump has previously floated the idea of a Vance-Rubio ticket but stopped short of making any formal endorsement. When pressed about whether he wanted an open Republican primary, Trump demurred: “They say ‘whoever Trump endorses is gonna win,’ or ‘whoever Trump picks is gonna win.’ I don’t know if that’s true or not.”

Post-Midterm Landscape

The comments come just days after Democrats secured control of both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections, flipping several Senate seats in states Trump carried during his 2024 reelection bid. The results have forced Republicans to recalibrate their strategy heading into the next presidential cycle.

Trump’s cryptic remarks about Democratic talent suggest he’s already gaming out potential 2028 matchups — even as he carefully avoids elevating any specific rivals. The former president’s reluctance to name names underscores the high-stakes jockeying already underway for the post-Trump era in both parties.
