The Red Baron employee who became an internet sensation after an emotional confrontation with pranksters has shared a heartfelt final message with supporters as donations to his family’s fundraiser approach $800,000.

Identified as Walt Z, the worker posted an update on the GoFundMe page started by military veteran Luke Oakenshield, a stranger who was moved to help after seeing Walt’s viral moment. The fundraiser, paused as of Thursday, had amassed $787,477.

“Your kind words have meant the world to my family and I this past week,” Walt wrote. “I still cannot believe how much you have all rallied behind us, and I can never thank you enough.”

He described spending extra time with his family and forming an ongoing friendship with Oakenshield. Walt said he was declining interview requests to protect his family’s privacy and asked would-be donors to redirect their generosity elsewhere. “Consider supporting another fundraiser, a local charity, or a church helping families in need this holiday season,” he urged.
The viral video showed Walt working freezer shelves in his Red Baron uniform when pranksters staged an Apple Pay scam. His emotional response—revealing his struggles to support four children while working punishing hours—struck a chord nationwide.
“I got kids at home that went to bed without me right now!” Walt shouted in the clip after the prankster claimed it was “just a joke.” “I can’t even pay my goddamn mortgage!”
The original Instagram account that posted the video was deactivated as backlash grew. Walt’s final message expressed gratitude for the unexpected support: “We will never forget it.”
