Vice President J.D. Vance has squarely blamed the Trump administration’s handling of the Iran war for the Republican Party’s bruising midterm losses, claiming the conflict alienated key voters and handed Democrats control of the Senate.

“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night,” Vance wrote in a post-election analysis on X. Democrats flipped seven Senate seats—including in Ohio, Vance’s home state—and are projected to hold nearly 260 House seats once remaining races are finalized.

Defectors Cite War as Breaking Point
Vance revealed internal polling showing 2024 Trump voters who switched to Democrats this year would only return to the GOP if the administration ended the Iran conflict, refocused on inflation, and recalibrated its Israel policy. “Anyone pushing amnesty is lying to you,” he added, dismissing immigration as a secondary issue.

Exit Polls Show Widespread Disapproval
NBC data found just 26% of voters considered the war a minor factor, while 63% called military action against Iran the “wrong decision”—with 82% of those critics voting Democratic. The economic toll proved equally damaging: Gas prices soared 43% to $4.27 per gallon after Iran disrupted Strait of Hormuz shipping, while diesel jumped 68%.
“Was it worth losing the Senate for the next 6 years?” Vance asked. “Everyone knows why we lost.”
