Washington state voters appear to have approved Initiative 638, a measure that would bar transgender athletes assigned male at birth from competing in girls’ and women’s school sports. Early ballot counts show the initiative leading with 57% support, marking a significant victory for conservative advocates who framed the issue as a matter of fairness in women’s athletics.
The Sex Verification Requirements for Female School Sports Initiative would require students to provide medical documentation proving they were born female in order to compete on girls’ teams. It also directs school governing bodies to establish verification protocols based on factors including reproductive anatomy, genetics, or testosterone levels.
‘Tonight, Washington Heard You’
Brian Heywood of Let’s Go Washington, the group behind the initiative, celebrated the preliminary results as a win for female athletes. “To every female athlete who wondered whether her voice mattered: tonight, Washington heard you,” Heywood told the Washington State Standard.
The campaign highlighted cases where transgender athletes had dominated girls’ competitions, arguing biological males have inherent physical advantages. Opponents criticized the measure as discriminatory, but supporters insist it maintains competitive fairness.
National Trend on Trans Sports Policies
Washington now joins states like Nebraska and Arizona that have recently passed similar restrictions. The vote reflects growing national debate over transgender participation in sports, with nearly half of U.S. states now implementing some form of regulation.
While counting continues, the substantial margin makes the initiative’s passage nearly certain. If certified, implementation would begin in upcoming school years, likely facing legal challenges from civil rights groups.
