Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) is making a play to lead House Republicans after their devastating midterm losses, announcing his bid for House Minority Leader in a letter to colleagues Wednesday.
The conservative firebrand, who easily won reelection in Ohio’s 4th District, framed his candidacy as a fresh start for a conference reeling from losing its majority. “When Americans get knocked down, they pick themselves up and get back to work. Now our Conference must do the same,” Jordan wrote, according to a copy obtained by CNN.
Investigations as a Weapon
Jordan signaled he would take an aggressive approach against Democrats, whose House takeover he warned would bring “nonstop investigations” targeting Republicans. The Judiciary Committee chairman has built his reputation on combative oversight tactics, including high-profile probes into the Biden administration.
His announcement came just hours after top Oversight Democrat Robert Garcia (D-CA) tweeted “LAWYER UP” as his party clinched the majority, foreshadowing likely investigations into Trump-era officials and policies.
Leadership Shakeup Ahead
Jordan is the first declared candidate for the post after current Speaker Mike Johnson reportedly told staff he won’t seek the minority leader role. The Ohio Republican took a veiled swipe at outgoing leadership, writing that the conference had operated “without a clear plan to survive the hour or the day in front of.”
Punchbowl News first reported Jordan’s intentions, noting he would pitch colleagues on bringing “new blood” to leadership. The move sets up a potential ideological clash within the GOP conference between establishment figures and Jordan’s hardline conservative faction.
With Democrats projected to hold between 220-225 seats in the new Congress, Jordan’s bid signals Republicans are preparing for two years of fierce opposition rather than bipartisan dealmaking.
