China's State Media Mocks U.S. Democracy After Midterms: 'The World Is Tired of It'

China’s state-run Global Times used the aftermath of the U.S. midterm elections to launch a scathing critique of Western democracy, declaring it a failing system that has lost global appeal. The Communist Party mouthpiece pointed to voter dissatisfaction polls as evidence that democratic governance is no longer seen as effective—even by its own citizens.

‘Democracy Is a Myth,’ Claims CCP-Linked Paper

In an editorial laced with sarcasm, the Global Times framed Western democracy as a “myth”—placing the word in scare quotes despite not attributing it to any external source. The piece argued that voters in the U.S. and Europe no longer believe their ballots lead to meaningful change, citing declining trust in political institutions.

The article highlighted a Pew Research Center poll showing 69% of Americans and similar majorities in France, Spain, and Italy are dissatisfied with how democracy functions in their countries. Other surveys, including OECD data, found only 31% of respondents felt they had any real influence over government decisions.

China’s Selective Critique of ‘Failed’ Systems

While lambasting Western democracies for “institutional corruption” and unresponsive governance, the editorial conspicuously avoided mentioning China’s own record. The CCP recently purged multiple high-ranking officials in anti-corruption campaigns—a routine occurrence under Xi Jinping’s authoritarian rule.

The Global Times framed its argument as a warning against “one-size-fits-all” governance models, accusing Western nations of pushing democracy as an ideological export. “Some Western politicians use democracy to provoke confrontation,” the piece claimed, dismissing international criticism of China’s human rights record as interference.

A Churchillian Rebuttal

The editorial’s timing—following a peaceful U.S. midterm election—drew sharp contrasts with China’s political reality. As the CCP paper derided electoral systems, it ignored that Chinese citizens have no legal mechanism to remove leaders. The piece evoked Winston Churchill’s famous quip that democracy is “the worst form of government, except for all the others.”

While Western voters may grumble about election outcomes, they retain the right to vote again. The Global Times offered no explanation for why China’s system—where dissent is criminalized and power changes only through party decree—is superior beyond its own unsupported assertions.
