Autistic Boy, 6, Found Alive After 3 Days in Kentucky Wilderness, Rescued by Trail Riders

A six-year-old autistic boy who vanished from his Kentucky home was rescued Tuesday after surviving three days alone in the wilderness, his small dog by his side. Roman Heilman, described by authorities as non-verbal, wandered away from his family’s property in Louisa on Sunday afternoon, sparking a massive search operation.

Volunteers on horseback made the startling discovery when the child emerged naked from dense brush onto a trail, cheerfully calling out the vowels from ‘Old McDonald’ — ‘E-I-E-I-O horsey’ — to his rescuers. The boy appeared remarkably unharmed despite his ordeal in the mountainous terrain about 30 miles south of Ashland.

The Dramatic Rescue

Jacob Mullins, a Louisiana trail rider who helped lead the search, described the surreal moment Roman appeared. ‘He just walked right out of the bushes over onto a horse trail,’ Mullins told the Lexington Herald-Leader. ‘He was naked and he was scratched and he had a little dog with him.’

The search team, which included about 10 riders covering more than 14 miles on horseback before dawn, found Roman approximately a mile and a half from his home. After giving the boy water and a banana, they wrapped him in a sweatshirt and transported him to safety on horseback.

Massive Search Effort

Authorities had issued an IAN Alert, a specialized notification for missing children with autism or mental health conditions. Hundreds of volunteers combed the area using horses, drones, and aircraft, while K9 Search & Rescue Services of West Virginia Inc joined local police and fire departments in the effort.

Mullins speculated that traditional search methods might have inadvertently worked against them. ‘The noisy rescue vehicles by land and air were likely scaring him,’ he said. ‘I think without the horses, he wouldn’t have come out.’

Rescuers had previously found Roman’s discarded diapers, pants, and jacket along the search route. K9 Search & Rescue Services, though not directly involved in the discovery, called the outcome ‘a true miracle’ in a statement praising the collective effort.
