Trump Calls Vindman’s Primary Loss to DSA’s Angie Nixon ‘Most Gratifying’

President Trump celebrated Alexander Vindman's defeat in Florida's Democratic Senate primary, calling him a 'treasonous creep' and predicting GOP nominee Ashley Moody will win the general election.

Trump Calls Vindman's Primary Loss to DSA's Angie Nixon 'Most Gratifying'

President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the “most gratifying” election result from Tuesday’s primaries was the defeat of Alexander Vindman, a former National Security Council official and key witness in Trump’s first impeachment, at the hands of Democratic Socialist Angie Nixon in Florida’s Senate race.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump took aim at Vindman, who served as Director of European Affairs for the NSC, and celebrated his loss to Nixon, a state representative backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). Trump did not spare Nixon either, describing her as a “Radical Left Lunatic” but predicting she would lose the general election to Republican nominee Ashley Moody.

“The most gratifying loss last night was that of a real treasonous creep, Alexander Vindman, to a Radical Left Lunatic, who can’t speak or think properly, and who will go down to certain defeat at the hands of Ashley Moody, a truly Fantastic Senator, from the Great State Florida,” Trump wrote.

Trump Revisits Impeachment Battle

The president used the occasion to relitigate the 2019 impeachment saga, reiterating his long-standing claim that Vindman lied about his July 2019 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump said Vindman “was the one who lied” about the “Perfect Call,” only for it to be discovered that “the conversation was routinely recorded” and proved Trump was not in the wrong.

“Vindman, if you remember, was the one who lied about my ‘Perfect Call’ with President Zelenskyy of Ukraine, only to find out that the conversation was routinely recorded and proved that I was 100% in the right (Completely Innocent!). It was indeed, a Perfect Call, and the Dumocrats Fake Impeachment effort massively failed. Vindman should be prosecuted for what he did!” Trump posted.

The call, which was at the center of Trump’s first impeachment, was widely reported to have been summarized in a White House memorandum. Trump has consistently maintained that the call was “perfect” and that there was no quid pro quo involving military aid to Ukraine.

Vindman’s Campaign Focused on Anti-Trump Messaging

Vindman, who testified in the Democrats’ partisan impeachment inquiry in 2019 while serving on the NSC, built his Senate campaign around his opposition to Trump, according to Breitbart News’s Matt Mercer. Vindman has also publicly called Trump a “Russian asset,” a charge that has drawn sharp criticism from Trump and his allies.

The primary loss marks a significant setback for Vindman, who had hoped to leverage his national profile from the impeachment hearings into a Senate seat. Instead, Nixon, a progressive state lawmaker, emerged victorious in the Democratic primary, setting up a general election matchup against Moody, who won the Republican nomination in the special election to fill the seat vacated by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Moody Poised for General Election

Trump’s post also served as a de facto endorsement of Moody, whom he praised as a “truly Fantastic Senator.” Moody, Florida’s former attorney general, is widely seen as the favorite in the general election, given the state’s Republican lean and her strong name recognition.

Nixon’s victory is a notable upset, but it may be short-lived. Political analysts expect Moody to prevail in November, a scenario Trump seemed to relish in his post, framing Vindman’s loss as doubly satisfying because it sets up an easy Republican win.

The special election was triggered by Rubio’s appointment as Secretary of State earlier this year, and the race has drawn national attention as a proxy battle between establishment and progressive wings of the Democratic Party.

Nixon, who has served in the Florida House since 2020, aligns with the progressive wing, advocating for Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and defunding the police, according to her campaign materials. Her victory over Vindman, a moderate with national security credentials, signals a shift among Florida Democrats toward more left-leaning candidates.

However, Trump’s comments suggest he sees Nixon as a weak general election opponent, and Moody’s campaign is likely to paint her as too far left for Florida voters.

Vindman’s defeat is a personal and political blow. He rose to prominence in 2019 when he testified about Trump’s call with Zelensky, alleging that Trump had pressured the Ukrainian leader to investigate Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Republicans accused Vindman of bias and questioned his loyalty, while Democrats hailed him as a whistleblower.

Since leaving the NSC, Vindman has been a vocal critic of Trump, frequently appearing on cable news and writing op-eds. His decision to run for Senate was seen as an attempt to channel that visibility into political office, but it ultimately fell short.

In the aftermath of his loss, Vindman has not yet commented publicly, according to the source. Nixon, meanwhile, faces an uphill battle against Moody, who has strong support from the state’s Republican establishment and national donors.

The general election is scheduled for November, and both campaigns are expected to ramp up their efforts in the coming weeks.
