The White House has escalated its war of words with comedian Rosie O’Donnell, issuing a blistering statement that labels the former View co-host a “nasty woman” and a “total slob” whose mental state has been compromised by an obsession with President Trump.
The rebuke came in response to O’Donnell’s week-long guest-hosting stint on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, where she used the platform to deliver a series of anti-Trump monologues. In a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly, White House representative Davis Ingle did not hold back.
“Rosie O’Donnell is a nasty woman and a total slob whose brain has been completely destroyed by Trump Derangement Syndrome,” Ingle said.
O’Donnell, who has been filling in for the vacationing Kimmel, appeared to relish the attack. On Thursday, she introduced herself on air as “nasty Rosie O’Donnell” before launching into a rhyming tirade against the president, referring to him as an “orange Voldemort” and urging him to drop a “Big Mac” and resign from office.
“Oh, Donny boy, it’s Rosie, Rosie calling. From Hollywood, the Jimmy Kimmel show. Drop that Big Mac that we all know you’re holding, because, my dear, I worry for you so,” O’Donnell said in her monologue. “Poor Donny boy, your polls, your polls are falling. Your reflecting pool is green as Mountain Dew. Your wig’s a mess, your ballroom is appalling, and with Iran you bit off more than you can chew.”
She went on to tell Trump he would “never be Obama” and suggested that the way to “Make America Great Again” would be for him to step down.
The back-and-forth is the latest chapter in a long-running feud between O’Donnell and Trump that dates back to his 2016 presidential campaign. According to the White House statement and previous reporting, O’Donnell has been consumed by Trump-related anger for years, to the point where her therapist reportedly warned her to step back from following the president for the sake of her own mental health. O’Donnell reportedly rejected that advice.
In January of last year, O’Donnell moved to Dublin, Ireland, telling fans she was seeking Irish citizenship and hoping to put some distance between herself and the political turmoil in the U.S. Despite that, she has continued to make frequent trips back to the United States, including her current stint on Kimmel’s show.
The White House’s sharp-tongued response is consistent with the administration’s history of using colorful language to push back against celebrity critics. But the personal nature of the attack — referencing O’Donnell’s appearance and mental state — underscores the intensity of the ongoing culture-war battle between Trump and his Hollywood detractors.
O’Donnell, for her part, has shown no sign of backing down. By embracing the “nasty” label and doubling down on her critiques, she appears to be leaning into the role of Trump antagonist — a position that has proven lucrative for other liberal comedians and commentators.
Whether this latest exchange will have any lasting political impact remains to be seen, but it has certainly generated headlines and social media buzz, with supporters on both sides weighing in on who got the better of the exchange.
