Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) used a Sunday morning TV appearance to hammer the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), labeling the organization’s platform as steeped in “anti-white rhetoric” and racism, while also accusing some of its candidates of antisemitism. The comments came during a discussion about Florida’s U.S. Senate race, where the Democratic nominee, Angie Nixon, is a DSA member.
Speaking on Fox News Channel’s “Sunday Morning Futures” with guest host Jason Chaffetz, Luna argued that Nixon’s nomination would galvanize Republican voters in the state, citing what she described as the DSA’s radical policies and divisive messaging.
“I actually predicted this โ that Angie Nixon being the nominee, at least in the state of Florida, will bring Republicans out to vote specifically against her because of the fact that they don’t want her radical policies,” Luna said. “And I’d also like to remind people that the DSA platform is also very much so anti-white rhetoric and racist.”
Luna pointed to DSA-aligned candidates in New York, claiming they have made “not just anti-white, but also antisemitic comments,” and questioned why such rhetoric is “somehow supposed to be socially acceptable.”
Nixon vs. Fried: A Party in Turmoil
The congresswoman also referenced an internal clash within the Florida Democratic Party, noting that party chair Nikki Fried had publicly stated that Nixon’s radicalism could cost the party the Senate race. Luna characterized the feud as a “big catfish,” suggesting that even Democrats recognize the electoral liability.
“Within the Florida Democrat Party, there was a big catfight that occurred between Angie Nixon and the Florida Democrat Party chair, Nikki Fried, ultimately saying, you’re too radical, we’re going to lose this race,” Luna said. She added that the party is likely to lose “just straight up because of their policy positions and platforms.”
The remarks come as Florida Republicans project confidence in their downballot races, with Luna noting that GOP gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds is helping to drive turnout by contrasting his vision with that of Democratic rival David Jolly, the former congressman.
‘No Such Thing as a Moderate Democrat’
Luna broadened her critique to the national Democratic Party, arguing that recent primaries show moderates being pushed aside by DSA-backed progressives, with funding that she claimed traces back to China.
“There’s no such thing as a moderate Democrat,” Luna said. “As you saw in these โ or these Democrat primaries, the moderate Democrats are being poached by organizations like DSA, and the funding mechanisms behind it are 100% China.”
She did not provide evidence to support the claim about Chinese funding, and the DSA has previously denied such allegations.
Context and Reaction
The DSA is a national organization that has grown in influence within the Democratic Party, endorsing progressive candidates like Nixon. The group’s platform includes calls for democratic socialism, Medicare for All, and the Green New Deal, but critics on the right have often accused it of promoting divisive identity politics.
Nixon, a state representative, won the Democratic primary in August despite being vastly outspent, a point Chaffetz noted during the interview, saying she was “outspent 16 to 1” but still emerged victorious.
Chaffetz also raised the issue of outside money in elections, suggesting that Democratic candidates may benefit from nongovernmental organizations even when official party coffers are low. “Don’t think for a moment that Democrats don’t have the money,” he said.
Luna, a first-term congresswoman from Florida’s 13th District, has been a vocal conservative voice on issues ranging from immigration to military policy. Her comments on Sunday are likely to heighten attention on the Florida Senate race, where Nixon is challenging Republican incumbent Ashley Moody.
Moody, the state’s former attorney general, has been seen as a strong favorite in the race, and Luna’s remarks suggest Republicans see Nixon’s DSA ties as a useful cudgel to rally their base.
The DSA did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Luna’s allegations, but the organization has historically defended its members’ right to free speech and criticized what it calls “red-baiting” by conservatives.
As the November election approaches, the clash over ideology and funding is likely to intensify, with both parties seeking to define the stakes for voters in Florida and beyond.
