Florida Democratic Senate candidate Angie Nixon, whose primary victory stunned the political establishment, is facing fresh scrutiny over her economic platform after a July interview resurfaced in which she openly embraced federal price controls — while acknowledging that her preferred label for them is largely a matter of semantics.
In the interview with a local television station, Nixon, who describes herself as a Democratic Socialist and joined the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) during her primary campaign, was asked whether she would support rent control on a federal level.
“I mean, I definitely would support rent stabilization in certain areas,” Nixon said.
When the interviewer pressed her on how that would differ from rent control, Nixon shrugged off the distinction: “Whatever, tomato, tuhmato, at the end of the day.”
She then went on to blame corporate greed for high rent prices and outlined her plan to cap rent increases at 10 percent.
The comments have drawn attention because of the timing: Nixon won the Democratic nomination after defeating Alexander Vindman, a former Trump impeachment witness, in a result that shook both the Florida and national Democratic establishment. She later joined the DSA during the primary, aligning herself with the organization’s push for public housing and other progressive priorities.
Meanwhile, critics of price controls point to New York City, where rent costs recently hit record highs — a market long known for its rent stabilization policies, according to a report in the New York Post.
Nixon has since tried to distance herself from some of her past statements and her DSA membership, saying she joined the group because she aligns with them on “fighting for adequate public housing, as well as fighting for quality healthcare, as well as making sure that we are getting our veterans off the street, taking big money out of politics.”
But her clarification has done little to quell the controversy. Since winning the nomination, Nixon has also made headlines for using harsh rhetoric against her Republican opponent, Sen. Ashley Moody, and for a heated exchange with Florida Democratic Party chair Nikki Fried.
According to a previous Breitbart News report, Nixon told Fried: “You never gave a care about me from the beginning, and now you’re telling me how to run my campaign? Stop gaslighting me!”
The latest revelation of Nixon’s explicit endorsement of federal price controls is likely to become a central issue in the general election campaign, particularly as voters in Florida weigh the potential impact of such policies on housing affordability.
Nixon’s campaign has not yet responded to requests for further comment on her interview remarks.
