An Alabama theater teacher charged with trying to solicit sex with a ten-year-old has resigned and been banned from all city school campuses, according to Breitbart News.
Joshua Feemster, 33, was arrested earlier this month on a charge of electronic solicitation of a child. At the time, he was teaching at Huntsville’s Academy for Academics and Arts Middle School, where he played a leading role in the school’s arts program.
Police in Huntsville conducted an online investigation in which Feemster allegedly believed he was arranging to meet a child. The encounter was instead part of an undercover operation set up by an officer.
Huntsville City Schools placed Feemster on leave following his arrest. A school system spokesperson confirmed this week that his resignation is effective Sept. 30, and that he will not be permitted on any district campus.
The district issued a brief statement reiterating its position on student safety. “The safety of our students is our highest priority, and our schools remain focused on providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all students,” Huntsville City Schools said.
Feemster, who is currently out of custody on a $15,000 bond, is scheduled for a court hearing at the end of this month, according to Fox 54. He has not been convicted of the charge.
A Respected Figure in the Arts Program
Before his arrest, Feemster was one of the more visible figures in the Academy for Academics and Arts’ theater program. In 2023, the school received a “Premiere Community for Theatre Education” designation from the Educational Theatre Association, an honor recognizing its commitment to the field.
Feemster spoke publicly about the award at the time. “Receiving this designation will help our students, program, and school to continue to develop and be a leader for theatre education in the state of Alabama,” he said, noting that the program was the first theater program in the state to earn the distinction and one of only a few elementary and middle schools chosen.
The designation followed years of work to build the school’s arts offerings into a regional model. That reputation is now shadowed by the criminal charge and the district’s decision to secure his departure.
Part of a Broader Federal Push
The Huntsville case arrives amid a broader shift in how the federal government approaches sexual misconduct by school employees. The Trump administration has launched a crackdown on what researchers call “educator sexual misconduct.”
Breitbart News has reported throughout the year that sexual exploitation of students by teachers has been widespread over the past two decades, with experts describing it as one of the most persistent and destructive trends in K-12 education. Districts of every size and type — public and private, urban and rural, northern and southern — have seen cases draw headlines on a near-weekly basis around the country.
One factor experts cite is the ease with which teachers and students can communicate privately online, which can give exploitative teachers the ability to groom vulnerable students into sexual relationships.
The administration’s new effort followed a “Dear Colleague” letter sent to U.S. school districts last month by Education Secretary Linda McMahon. Breitbart News obtained the letter, in which McMahon pointed to “institutional silence and complacency” by school districts and argued that teachers’ unions are committed “to shield their members from disciplinary actions.”
McMahon characterized those practices as failures of districts’ “moral and legal responsibilities to parents and students.”
The push appears particularly focused on a practice known as “passing the trash” — concealing sexual offenses and transferring a teacher to another school, or recommending the individual as a good hire in a different district. The Education Department has begun investigating districts that appear not to be complying with certain federal laws, according to Breitbart News.
“This epidemic of nationwide sexual abuse in our schools must end,” McMahon said when announcing the effort.
It is not yet clear whether the Huntsville case will factor into any federal review. Feemster’s court hearing is set for later this month, and the charge against him remains pending.
