With the 2026 midterms approaching, American Thinker has published an editorial by David Prentice that makes a familiar-sounding but insistently argued case: this is the most important election of your lifetime. Prentice acknowledges the line has been used before — he says he’s made it about the last three presidential cycles himself — but argues that the character of the Democratic Party makes it true again this year.
According to the October 21 editorial, the piece is aimed at voters who either welcome the policy direction of the last several years or who fear what the left will do if it regains power. Prentice writes that he counts himself in the latter camp, calling the Democrats “an insufferably horrid party” that “up the ante” every time observers assume it has hit its floor. He frames the contest in explicitly spiritual terms, invoking the hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” and describing leftist politics as a force that “toys with evil.”
A party of Jacobins, not Kennedys
The editorial’s central claim is a party-in-transformation argument. Prentice asserts that Democrats have “shape-shifted from the party of JFK to a party of jaded, angry Jacobins,” and points to a roster of figures and groups he considers evidence: New York City’s mayor, Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, whom he labels a “Marxist, Islamist,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom, and the Democratic Socialists of America, which he says is “becoming their center.”
He also invokes Kamala Harris, the party’s 2024 nominee, citing a claim that she said America has never been great. Prentice argues that a party seeking to govern institutions should not hate the country — a charge he says the modern left can no longer escape.

A substantial share of the piece is devoted to media criticism. Prentice contends that Democrats “own the high ground in the information wars” and that journalists who present themselves as objective are, in his telling, “propagandists for radicalism” who suppress stories damaging to the left and fabricate claims about the right.
The policy indictment
From there the editorial runs through a list of grievances. Prentice criticizes continued support for transgender rights, arguing that advocates ignore what he describes as the movement’s destructive consequences and its efforts to suppress scientific debate. He condemns Democratic comfort with socialism and communism, citing the death tolls of regimes that adopted those systems — the killing fields, the death camps — and arguing that ignorance of that history is no excuse for Americans who now support similar ideas.
He also points to political violence, listing the killing of Charlie Kirk, multiple attempts on President Trump’s life, and the harassment of conservative speakers on college campuses, which he ties to the left’s habit of branding conservatives as Nazis and Hitler. Immigration policy draws similar treatment: Prentice describes the immigration debate in the U.S. and Europe as a debacle sold as a positive, accuses leftist elites of deliberately pursuing “replacement theory,” and charges that critics of the policy are dismissed as racist.
Education and cultural self-hatred get their own section. Prentice argues that young people, particularly white males but whites of all ages, are taught to hate themselves and their own culture and country, along with those who disagree with them.

The election-integrity argument
The longest single argument concerns voting itself. Prentice claims election security is an issue nearly 75 percent of Democratic voters support but that party leaders refuse to act on. He cites the 2005 Commission on Federal Election Reform, led by Jimmy Carter and James Baker, which recommended voter ID, vote verification, cleaning up voter rolls, and expressed suspicion of mail-in ballots and voting-machine technology — identifying mail-in voting as the area most likely to encourage fraud.
From that, Prentice builds a case that Democrats have blocked such fixes because mail-in voting benefits them, pointing to its heavy use in 2020, unsecured drop boxes, ballot harvesting, and — as he asserts without elaboration — cheating in California. He quotes Rush Limbaugh’s claim that Democrats treated the Carter-Baker commission as a how-to guide rather than a warning, and notes that only one Democratic lawmaker voted for the Save America Act.
The editorial goes on to accuse Democrats of allowing the DSA to infiltrate and steer the party, and says much of its leadership openly favors abolishing the Electoral College, packing the courts, replacing the presidency with a politburo, and terminating the Senate.
Turning outrage into turnout
Prentice does not qualify these claims or present opposing views; the piece is a call to action, and it reads like one. His conclusion is that the stakes justify the alarm: Democrats, he writes, will undo recent gains and “destroy America with their ‘new and improved ideas,'” and voters who stay home will have only themselves to blame.
The editorial closes by telling readers there is still time to stop the left and urging them to “step up” and “be counted” before, in his words, there is no country left to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Whether that message moves midterm turnout is, of course, the question the election itself will answer.
