A 42-year-old hospital worker from Glendale, Arizona, collapsed in a Phoenix courtroom early Wednesday morning after a prosecutor told a judge he could face up to 100 years in prison on child sexual exploitation charges, according to the Daily Wire, citing the New York Post.
Joshua James Lozano, who cleans surgical equipment at Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center in Sun City West, was standing at the podium during what the Daily Wire described as a dramatic 5 a.m. hearing when his legs gave out, sending him to the floor. The collapse came as Maricopa County prosecutor Ashley Stetson laid out the potential sentence Lozano faces: 10 felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, each carrying a mandatory 10-year prison term to be served consecutively under Arizona law.
Why the Numbers Add Up to a Century
Arizona’s statutes on crimes against children require judges to impose back-to-back sentences rather than allowing time to run concurrently. That strict sentencing formula left Lozano — a man with no prior felony record — staring down a potential century behind bars if convicted on all counts.
The sudden medical emergency brought the early-morning proceedings to a halt, forcing the judge to summon jail medical personnel to tend to Lozano. Under state rules, the courtroom emergency permitted the court to pause the hearing beyond the usual 24-hour deadline for initial appearances.
How Investigators Built the Case
The charges stem from an extensive Glendale police investigation into explicit online material. According to the Daily Wire’s account, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children flagged multiple CyberTips from Lozano’s internet service provider earlier this year. Detectives then executed search warrants on Verizon Wireless and Metronet, tracing an online account, phone number, and IP addresses directly to the suspect.
Stetson further alleged that Lozano had been communicating directly with underage minors online, the Daily Wire reported. Lozano has lived in Glendale with his wife for eight years, according to the account, and has past arrests for DUI and driving on a suspended license. He has not been convicted of the current charges.
Bond Set at $150,000 After Defense Push for Lower Amount
Defense attorney Michael Tamou asked for a lower $50,000 bond, pointing to the defendant’s local ties. The judge rejected that request and instead sided with prosecutors, setting a $150,000 secured bond.
If Lozano manages to post bail, his release would come with a series of stringent conditions. He would be required to wear an electronic leg monitor, would be banned from possessing a smartphone, would be barred from accessing the internet except for legal matters, and would be strictly forbidden from contacting any minors.
Lozano remains in custody and is scheduled for his next court date on September 21.
