Barbara Bush, a daughter of former President George W. Bush, donated $2,500 to a super PAC supporting Democrat James Talarico in the Texas U.S. Senate race, according to federal campaign finance records.
The Austin American-Statesman reported Friday that the Federal Election Commission’s website lists Bush as the source of the September 23, 2026, contribution to Lone Star Rising PAC, which is backing Talarico’s bid against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.
The donation is notable less for its size than for its visibility. Bush, who has described herself as unaffiliated with either major party, has now put money behind a candidate her family’s political operation would not be expected to support — and she did so in a way that would be publicly reported.
A campaign finance expert’s read on the disclosure
Andrew Cates, a political attorney and campaign finance expert, told Houston Public Media that the disclosure was avoidable if anonymity had been the goal.
“I would imagine that somebody in such a prominent political family, if she wanted to ensure that her contribution was anonymous or not visible, that any number of lawyers that they probably have at their disposal could have told her how,” Cates said.
He pointed out that a contribution to a 501(c)(4) organization would have been completely anonymous, whereas a PAC reports all of the money coming in and going out.
“She gave it to a PAC that reports all the money in and out,” Cates said, according to Houston Public Media.
Not her first turn toward Democratic candidates
Bush has crossed party lines before. In October 2024, she campaigned in Pennsylvania for then-Vice President Kamala Harris ahead of Harris’s loss to President Donald Trump, Breitbart News reported at the time.
She has also said she does not identify with either political party, and she has been an outspoken advocate for abortion access.
Her father, George W. Bush, remains a prominent figure in Texas Republican politics, and her grandfather, George H.W. Bush, was the last Republican to carry the state’s Bush family name into the White House. Barbara Bush’s donation lands in a race where the state’s Republican establishment has coalesced behind Paxton.
The PAC’s heavyweight backers
Lone Star Rising PAC has drawn far larger sums than Bush’s contribution. As Breitbart News reported in July, Democrat megadonor Reid Hoffman gave more than $10 million to the super PAC boosting Talarico, according to reports citing newly filed federal records.
The LinkedIn co-founder’s contribution was reported by Bloomberg, which cited FEC filings. The pro-Talarico group has spent millions backing the Austin state representative and attacking Paxton.
Recent polling showed Paxton narrowly leading Talarico as Texans prepare to vote in the November midterms.
Paxton’s campaign has framed the race in stark terms. According to his campaign website, “This election will determine whether Texas remains the conservative stronghold that leads America or becomes another state controlled by the radical left.”
What the money signals
The filing puts a Bush family name on the donor rolls of the same committee that has become the financial engine of Talarico’s Senate bid. Whether the $2,500 reflects a personal gesture or a broader signal from within the Bush orbit is unclear, and Bush has not publicly commented on the contribution.
But in a state where the Bush name still carries weight among Republican donors and operatives, the disclosure is likely to draw attention beyond its dollar value — particularly with Paxton and Talarico locked in a race that recent polling shows within single digits.
