Border Patrol agents in Texas’s Del Rio Sector pulled over a pickup truck on a rural highway near Eagle Pass earlier this month and discovered four people sealed inside a plastic water tank in the truck bed, according to an account of the incident published by Breitbart Texas.
The stop happened on September 14, when agents from the Eagle Pass South Station spotted a 2007 Ford F-150 traveling a route known for human and narcotics smuggling and decided the vehicle warranted a closer look. After speaking with the driver, agents inspected the truck and noticed a large portable water tank — the kind commonly used on ranches in the area — sitting in the cargo bed.
What they found inside changed the nature of the stop. Four people were packed into the tank’s narrow interior, and getting them out was not a simple matter. The space was so tight that agents could not pull the occupants free by hand and had to enlarge the opening using power tools before extracting them, according to the Breitbart Texas report.
Nationalities and Processing
Once removed, the four were interviewed and agents determined they were in the United States illegally and were being transported in violation of federal law. The group consisted of two Bolivian nationals, one Cuban national, and one Colombian citizen, according to Border Patrol.
None of the four required medical attention, the agency said. They were taken to the Border Patrol station in Uvalde, Texas, and processed for removal.
The driver — a 19-year-old United States citizen — was not identified by name. He now faces felony charges for transporting illegal aliens, and ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations took custody of him for further investigation and prosecution.
A Chief’s Blunt Assessment
Del Rio Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony “Scott” Good framed the discovery as a near-miss, describing the concealment method in stark terms. “Smugglers don’t care for the safety of those they see as mere human cargo,” Good said. “Putting people in confined spaces with no means of escape is dangerous and barbaric. If not for the actions of our highly trained agents, this incident could have resulted in tragedy.”
The case fits a pattern that has emerged in the Del Rio Sector in recent weeks. As Breitbart Texas has reported, agents there have disrupted multiple smuggling attempts in which people were hidden inside confined spaces on trains. Border Patrol sources described the tactic of cramming human cargo into enclosed compartments as a sign of desperation among cartel-linked smuggling operations.
Broader Numbers at the Southwest Border
The water tank case unfolded against a backdrop of sharply reduced Border Patrol activity along the southwest border. According to Customs and Border Protection, apprehensions for the month of August stayed well below 10,000 — a figure that reflects the 16th consecutive month with zero illegal alien releases at the southwest border.
Breitbart Texas also reported exclusively that known Got-Aways recorded by the agency have fallen 98 percent from their peak during the Biden-era border crisis, a decline that tracks with the drop in overall apprehensions.
The incident near Eagle Pass illustrates how smuggling methods can shift even as volume declines. Concealment in tight, unventilated spaces — whether a ranch-style water tank or a rail car — leaves those being moved with little ability to escape if something goes wrong, a risk that Good’s statement emphasized and that agents cited as reason for the felony case against the driver.
The suspect’s case now rests with Homeland Security Investigations, which is pursuing prosecution.
