A longtime animal caretaker in Ceuta claims migrants ransacked a cat colony shelter, using it as a toilet and stealing food meant for felines, leaving the area in ruins.

Ceuta Caretaker Alleges Migrants 'Destroyed' Cat Shelter, Stole Supplies

A cat colony shelter in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta has been left in ruins after illegal migrants allegedly ransacked the site, using it as an open-air toilet and stealing supplies meant for the animals, according to a local caretaker.

Sohora Driss, who has cared for feral cat colonies in Ceuta for 16 years, told El Faro de Ceuta that migrants who arrived during July’s mass border crossing destroyed structures at the Recinto Sur neighborhood shelter. She described finding human waste near feeding areas and said critical supplies like food bowls, blankets, and veterinary equipment had been stolen or thrown down a cliff.

‘They Use the Bowls as Ashtrays’

Driss showed journalists how carefully constructed recovery spaces for injured cats had been trampled. “The water I leave for cats, they take it to wash themselves,” she said. “They use the bowls as ashtrays.” The caretaker estimated nine cats died after being hit by cars while fleeing the disrupted area.

Safety Fears Force Routine Change

What was once a round-the-clock labor of love has become a dangerous chore, Driss said. She now avoids nighttime visits due to safety concerns and recently suffered weeks of pain after tripping on damaged stairs leading to the colony. “I am afraid now,” she admitted. “I can’t come as I used to.”

Video from El Faro shows a migrant rummaging near the shelter during the interview, claiming to search for cotton. Driss, speaking in Arabic, confronted the man before telling reporters: “I don’t lie, and I don’t exaggerate. In fact, I hold a lot of things back.”

Calls for Authorities to Act

The caretaker has demanded police clear a nearby migrant encampment and asked city agencies to restore the area for remaining cats. “My intention is for them to leave right away,” she said, while acknowledging alternatives should be found for the migrants.

The allegations come amid ongoing tension in Ceuta following July’s border surge, when over 1,000 migrants entered the Spanish territory from Morocco in a single day.
