Attorneys say Pike's recovery is 'medically unprecedented' after surviving two doses of pentobarbital; Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has paused the state's remaining execution and ordered an independent review.

Christa Pike Regains Consciousness, Speaks After Two Botched Lethal Injections

Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike has regained consciousness and can speak again after surviving two botched lethal injections that left her critically injured, her legal team said Tuesday. According to Breitbart News, Pike had been placed on a ventilator following the failed execution attempt.

“Her recovery is medically unprecedented. Her prognosis remains unclear but, at a minimum, we expect a long recovery,” her attorneys said in a statement. They expressed gratitude to the first responders and hospital medical team who, in their words, treated Pike “like a human” and provided exceptional care.

The attorneys also thanked the thousands of people around the world who sent messages of prayer and support for Pike.

Two Doses, One Survived Execution

Pike, 50, was given two lethal doses of pentobarbital but did not die. Prior to regaining consciousness, she required life-saving medical intervention. Last week her attorneys said doctors spent roughly an hour trying to start an IV line in Pike, using at least seven needles.

“One of which appeared to be bent when it was pulled from her arm,” said attorney Randy Spivey. He criticized the state for continuing with the procedure despite complications he said the defense had warned about in court months earlier.

Spivey reportedly began demanding that medical professionals start life-saving procedures after it became clear Pike was still breathing following the injections. He said he received no information or confirmation that an ambulance was on the way until 8:50 that evening, and had no idea when or if medical professionals began assisting her.

Governor Orders Review, Halts Remaining Execution

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has ordered an independent review and postponed the state’s only remaining execution scheduled for this year. According to the report, it is the second time Lee has postponed an execution during his seven years in office.

Pike’s attorneys said Tuesday they will continue pressing Gov. Lee to commute her sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

In an emergency motion filed in Davidson County Chancery Court last week, the attorneys stated that Pike could be heard “crying, whimpering, and breathing loudly” during the failed execution. They added that both of her arms were swollen, burned, and blistered.

Background on the Case

Pike was found guilty and sentenced to death for her role in the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. At the time of sentencing, at age 18, she was the youngest woman in the United States to receive a death sentence.

The case has drawn renewed attention as details of the failed execution have emerged, raising fresh questions about the state’s lethal injection protocols and the handling of medical emergencies during executions.
