Christina Applegate Says She Doesn't Have MS After All: 'Congratulations, You Don't Have MS'

Christina Applegate says the diagnosis she spent years publicly grappling with was wrong. The actress revealed on her MS-focused podcast that a doctor has told her she does not have multiple sclerosis, a reversal she described as both welcome and disorienting.

Applegate shared the news on a new two-part episode of “MeSsY,” the podcast she co-hosts with actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who has spoken openly about her own MS. ABC News reported the disclosure, which Breitbart News also covered.

An unexpected reversal

Applegate, 54, said the moment did not land the way a clean bill of health usually would.

“This may come as great news, but to me, it comes as like, very like I’m back at square one,” she said, according to ABC News. She recounted that her doctor entered the room with the verdict: “Congratulations, you don’t have MS. Congratulations.”

The actress, known for “Married… with Children” and “Anchorman,” first went public with an MS diagnosis in 2021. She has spoken about the condition repeatedly since, including in a March interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, where she said she had not yet come to terms with the diagnosis.

“This is a lifelong disease with no cure. Period,” she said at the time.

Symptoms haven’t gone anywhere

What makes the reversal especially complicated, Applegate said, is that nothing about her body has changed. She told listeners she still experiences “every symptom of someone with MS” — symptoms she deals with daily.

According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, MS is “an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and the body.” Its cause is unknown, though researchers believe a mix of genetic and environmental factors plays a role. Most diagnoses occur between ages 20 and 50, and women are two to three times more likely than men to be diagnosed.

Applegate said an investigation into what is actually causing her debilitating symptoms is set to begin next week. The podcast episodes mark her return after a recent break she took to process the news.

A public health story told in real time

The disclosure adds another chapter to a diagnosis Applegate has discussed in public for years, and it raises questions she said she cannot yet answer. For now, the woman who once described MS as a lifelong, incurable disease is waiting on doctors to explain what has been happening to her body — and why.
