Three news organizations are taking the Trump administration to court after their reporters were barred from the White House under a ban President Donald Trump imposed late last week. CNN, MS NOW, and Politico said Monday they would file suit in federal court in Washington, D.C., arguing the administration is violating their First Amendment rights, according to The Daily Wire.
“This morning, we notified the government that we are filing a lawsuit today to protect our First Amendment rights and defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports or publishes,” the outlets said in a joint statement Monday. “Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.”
How the ban unfolded
Trump first announced Friday that reporters from the three outlets would not be permitted inside the White House, accusing them of pushing “fake news.” By the weekend, the practical effects set in: reporters from those organizations began being turned away as their press badges were deactivated.
In a Monday post on Truth Social, the president framed the decision as a national security matter rather than a press-freedom fight, drawing a distinction between journalism broadly and the coverage he objects to.
“The White House is not instituting an assault on the Free Press, something which I cherish. It is instituting an assault on the FAKE NEWS, something that has grown like Cancer in our beloved United States of America,” Trump wrote. He described the phenomenon as “corrupt, purposeful, pervasive, fully coordinated, and totally out of control” and said it “is a threat to our National Security, and must be stopped.”
The president’s comments Friday suggested the list of barred outlets could grow. “Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” he posted on Truth Social, adding a warning: “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”
A pattern of access fights
This is not the first time the White House has moved to cut off access for outlets Trump considers hostile. During his first term, the administration revoked the credentials of CNN correspondent Jim Acosta. CNN sued, and a federal judge ordered the credentials restored.
Earlier this year, the administration’s restrictions on the Associated Press became the subject of ongoing litigation, with an appeals court allowing some limits to remain in place while the case proceeds.
What comes next
The new lawsuit now puts the White House press access question back in front of a federal judge in Washington. The three organizations have cast the dispute as a matter of principle that extends beyond their own coverage — framing the government’s power to decide who gets a seat in the briefing room as a question that touches the public’s access to information.
The White House, for its part, has rejected the framing that it is targeting the press as an institution. Trump’s Truth Social statement emphasized that his objection is to what he calls false and coordinated coverage, not to a free press generally.
Whether the court agrees is now the central question in a case that will test how much latitude a president has to control who enters the White House grounds — and how far a president can go in penalizing outlets whose coverage he dislikes.
