With a major regulatory hurdle cleared, CNN employees are reportedly anxious about layoffs and a potential editorial shift under Paramount's David Ellison.

CNN Staffers Brace for 'Bloodbath' as Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery Merger Nears Completion

Paramount’s long-anticipated acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery has inched closer to the finish line, and the mood inside CNN’s newsroom is reportedly grim. According to a New York Post report, staffers at the 46-year-old cable news network are bracing for deep cuts and a possible change in editorial direction once the deal closes.

The merger cleared a significant obstacle earlier this week when Paramount reached an agreement with 12 state attorneys general, a deal that paves the way for the creation of a media giant spanning CBS News, CNN, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., HBO Max, and Paramount+. The combined entity would control a vast swath of television and film production, cable news, and streaming platforms.

‘Like a Hurricane Coming’

That prospect has done little to soothe nerves at CNN, where employees described a sense of impending doom. “People are very nervous,” one staffer told the Post. “It’s dark. It’s like when you do hurricane coverage. You see the storm spinning off the coast of Haiti and moving towards Florida and you’re just waiting and you’re like, ‘Oh, s–t.’”

Another television executive was more blunt: “Bloodbath coming, including at CNN. That’s the next big step — slashing and burning.” The language echoes fears that have been building since June, when reports first surfaced that CNN employees were turning their boss’s office into a makeshift “psychiatrist’s couch” to air concerns about the merger. At the time, staffers reportedly worried that Paramount chief David Ellison’s ties to former President Trump — as well as those of his father, Larry Ellison, a major Trump donor — could push CNN’s coverage to the right.

Paramount has projected at least $6 billion in cost savings from the deal, a figure that would likely translate to several thousand job losses across the combined companies. For CNN, which launched on June 1, 1980, as the first 24-hour cable news channel, the specter of layoffs is particularly acute. The network, founded by Ted Turner and Reese Schonfeld and headquartered in Atlanta, has already weathered years of declining cable subscriptions and leadership turnover.

Town Hall and Tensions

CNN boss Mark Thompson is scheduled to hold a town hall on Wednesday to address staff concerns, according to the Post. Whether that will be enough to quell the anxiety remains to be seen. The merger still requires final regulatory approvals, but with the state attorneys general agreement in place, the path appears clearer than ever.

For now, CNN employees are left waiting — and watching the storm approach.
