CNN’s Zeleny: Even Hong Backers Who ‘Enjoyed’ Her Policies Fretted Over Electability in Wisconsin Primary

CNN's Jeff Zeleny reports that progressive voters in Wisconsin's Democratic gubernatorial primary liked Francesca Hong's policies but worried she couldn't beat Republicans, helping David Crowley edge ahead with Tony Evers' backing.

CNN's Zeleny: Even Hong Backers Who 'Enjoyed' Her Policies Fretted Over Electability in Wisconsin Primary

CNN’s Chief National Affairs Correspondent Jeff Zeleny said Tuesday that voters in Wisconsin’s Democratic gubernatorial primary who were drawn to Francesca Hong’s progressive platform nonetheless harbored deep reservations about her electability — a dynamic that helped shape the tight race against David Crowley.

Speaking during CNN’s Election Night coverage, Zeleny said that conversations with voters throughout the day revealed a recurring tension among even the most liberal-leaning Democrats: admiration for Hong’s ideas, but a nagging fear that she might not be the strongest candidate to take on Republicans in a general election.

Enthusiasm vs. Electability

“Even some of the most self-described liberal-leaning progressive voters expressed some concern and caution about Francesca Hong,” Zeleny told anchor Laura Coates. “Yes, they said they liked her. Yes, they said they enjoyed her policies, but they were worried about electability.”

Zeleny noted that Hong’s supporters had initially expected her to win the race outright, but that outcome has not materialized. Instead, the returns highlighted a more divided electorate, with Crowley — who had the backing of incumbent Governor Tony Evers — edging ahead as the night wore on.

Evers’ Influence

Zeleny attributed the closeness of the results to that persistent electability argument, one that Evers himself hammered home while campaigning for Crowley.

“There’s no doubt, in the end of this race, the undecided voters, and even some of the ones on the fence, were clearly being persuaded by this argument of electability that Gov. Tony Evers was really delivering from the rafters as he was supporting David Crowley,” Zeleny said.

The Wisconsin Democratic primary has emerged as a test of whether progressive policy platforms can overcome moderate voters’ fears about general-election viability. With Crowley leading, the race appears to signal that, at least in this cycle, electability concerns carried more weight than policy enthusiasm.

Zeleny’s reporting underscores a broader pattern in Democratic primaries, where candidates with ambitious agendas often face skepticism from voters who prioritize winning over ideological purity.
