Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) is publicly distancing herself from Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed’s decision to campaign alongside progressive streamer Hasan Piker, saying she doesn’t understand the choice and believes Piker should be condemned for his rhetoric.
During an appearance on NewsNation’s Elizabeth Vargas Reports Wednesday, Stevens was pressed on why El-Sayed would align himself with Piker, a prominent Twitch broadcaster with a massive following who has generated controversy for his commentary on Israel and other issues.
“Well, I don’t know why. You should ask him,” Stevens replied when host Elizabeth Vargas asked whether El-Sayed should distance himself from Piker.
Stevens went further, making her own disapproval clear. “I believe he should be condemned. I do. I said that… on Election Day, I said that,” she said. “I don’t know what the guy has to do with Michigan.”
The Michigan congresswoman also rejected any suggestion that Piker represents the mainstream of the party, stating bluntly: “I don’t agree with Piker. I don’t think he’s a part of the Democratic Party.”
A Growing Intraparty Divide
Stevens’ comments highlight a deepening fault line within the Democratic Party as El-Sayed, a progressive physician and former Detroit health director, seeks to hold the Michigan Senate seat. His campaign has embraced left-wing figures like Piker, who commands a huge online audience but has frequently drawn criticism from both Republicans and some establishment Democrats for his fiery political commentary.
Piker, who has millions of followers across streaming platforms, has become a polarizing force in progressive media, praised by supporters for his unapologetic advocacy and criticized by detractors for comments that have been characterized as antisemitic or extreme. The streamer has denied those allegations, but his presence on the campaign trail has become a liability for some Democrats eager to appeal to moderate voters.
Stevens’ remarks suggest that El-Sayed’s strategy of courting online influencers may be creating friction within his own party, even as he battles for a seat that could determine control of the Senate.
Michigan Stakes
Michigan’s Senate race is expected to be one of the most competitive in the country, with both parties pouring resources into the state. El-Sayed’s progressive platform has energized young voters, but critics worry that high-profile figures like Piker could alienate the suburban swing voters who often decide statewide elections in Michigan.
The congresswoman’s insistence that Piker “has nothing to do with Michigan” underscores a broader concern among some Democrats that national progressive celebrities could overshadow local issues and hurt the party’s chances with independents.
Stevens, who has been a vocal moderate voice in the delegation, did not mince words when asked why El-Sayed would invite such controversy. Her answer — that she simply doesn’t know — left the door open for further questions about the campaign’s strategy.
Piker’s Role in the Race
Piker has not been officially affiliated with the El-Sayed campaign, but his appearances alongside the candidate have drawn significant media attention. The streamer has used his platform to urge his large young audience to support Democrats, a valuable asset in an election where turnout among younger voters will be critical.
However, Stevens’ comments suggest that whatever value Piker might bring in mobilizing the base is offset by the political risk of associating with a figure she believes — and says — does not represent the party.
“I don’t agree with Piker,” she reiterated, positioning herself clearly against the streamer’s brand of commentary.
The El-Sayed campaign did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Stevens’ remarks, but the split highlights a challenge for Democrats nationwide as they navigate the influence of online personalities while trying to maintain broad appeal.
For now, Stevens has made her position unmistakable: she doesn’t understand the decision, she doesn’t endorse it, and she says Piker deserves condemnation.
