Dolly Parton’s estate has asked a Nashville judge to keep the country music icon’s nephew away from its employees and business dealings, accusing him of threatening violence and vowing to destroy his aunt’s legacy in court filings submitted Tuesday.
The request for a temporary restraining order was filed by She’s Alive, the entity that manages and protects Parton’s professional property and business, along with other court documents. The filings offer the first public signs of discord in what had been a carefully managed estate process for one of the most beloved figures in music and beyond. Named in the filings is Bryan Seaver, who owns a company that provided Parton’s security detail. According to the AP, Seaver was handpicked by the star to announce her death from cancer last month. He did not immediately respond to an email from the AP requesting comment.
A Pattern of Escalating Messages, Estate Alleges
In the court documents, She’s Alive claims Seaver sent increasingly threatening messages over the last several weeks. The entity is run by Danny Nozell, Parton’s longtime manager, and last week it terminated Seaver and Squadron Augmented Protection Services, saying his “terrorizing conduct made their continued retention untenable,” according to the filings.
The documents lay out a series of text messages and emails that She’s Alive attributes to Seaver, beginning just before Parton’s death. Those early messages allegedly contain threats to destroy the brand. After her death, the messages shift in tone, with Seaver reportedly reveling in newfound fame and calling himself an “international arms dealer.”
One message dated Sept. 1 and included in the filings reads: “I’m going to set up a podcast dedicated to ruining Dolly’s brand partnerships and telling the violations these people have done on us. It’s going to be great. Or fβββ pay me.”
Seaver also claimed in the messages that he worked for private military contractors overseas during the Iraq War and used that experience as part of the threats, according to the complaint.
Fallout Inside the Estate
The alleged conduct has had tangible consequences within Parton’s business operation. According to the court documents, Parton’s trusts and estates attorney has left, and employees of She’s Alive have resigned. The entity has also had to hire private security for its employees, including at their homes, the filings state.
The restraining order She’s Alive is seeking would bar Seaver from talking with or being within 1,000 feet (304.8 meters) of She’s Alive employees, attorneys and business partners. It would also prevent him from interfering with the entity’s business relationships.
The dispute marks a stark departure from the tightly controlled public narrative that has surrounded Parton’s affairs throughout her career and after her death. Parton, whose warmth and business acumen made her a rare unifying figure across genres and generations, left behind a sprawling commercial empire that includes music, theme parks, film and television production, and a wide range of brand partnerships.
The filings do not detail the specific “violations” Seaver referenced in the Sept. 1 message, nor do they specify what prompted the alleged shift in his communications. The AP reported that the court documents provide the first indication of friction in the estate process.
It is not clear from the filings when a judge might rule on the temporary restraining order request, or whether Seaver has retained legal counsel. The AP noted that he did not respond to a request for comment.
The case adds a note of controversy to the aftermath of Parton’s death. Tributes to the singer have continued across the entertainment industry and beyond, with her estate previously projecting an image of orderly transition. Tuesday’s filings suggest that behind the scenes, those managing her affairs have been contending with a far more volatile situation.
