El-Sayed’s ‘Red-Green’ Alliance Alarm: Michigan Senate Hopeful Draws Lenin-Islamist Comparisons

Critics warn that Michigan Senate candidate Abdulrahman El-Sayed embodies a 'red-green alliance' of far-left and Islamist illiberalism, citing his Marxist ties and Sharia remarks.

El-Sayed's 'Red-Green' Alliance Alarm: Michigan Senate Hopeful Draws Lenin-Islamist Comparisons

Abdulrahman El-Sayed, the Michigan Senate hopeful, is facing a barrage of criticism from conservative commentators who see his campaign as a troubling fusion of far-left economics and Islamist politics. Writing for The Daily Wire, critics have dubbed him the embodiment of a ‘red-green alliance’—a term popularized by author Ayaan Hirsi Ali to describe the convergence of communist and Islamist movements in their shared opposition to the liberal democratic order.

El-Sayed, who has run on a progressive platform in the Democratic primary, has repeatedly denied being a democratic socialist, instead calling himself ‘a capitalist who hates capitalism.’ But critics point to a podcast appearance where he endorsed and expanded on Bernie Sanders’ proposal for public ownership of AI companies, saying, ‘I want to actually take it a step further… we need some system of public control.’

The ‘Watermelon’ Strategy

The ‘red-green’ metaphor, as articulated by Hirsi Ali, describes a coalition that is ‘green on the outside, red on the inside’—Islamist in outward appeal but rooted in revolutionary socialist aims. Hirsi Ali, a Somali-born activist who survived female genital mutilation and has lived under death threats since renouncing Islam, has spent two decades warning about this unlikely but potent alliance. According to the commentary, these two forces, despite their apparent contradictions—one waving rainbow flags, the other stoning those who do—have found common ground in their hatred of the West, individual liberty, and the American experiment.

The Daily Wire piece argues that El-Sayed’s associations and statements fit this pattern. He is described as a close friend and campaign partner of Hasan Piker, a leftist streamer who recently said, ‘F*ck the Constitution. I wipe my a** with the Constitution. It’s a f*cking piece of paper.’ The article suggests that such sentiments—dismissing the constitutional protections of the Fourth and Fifth Amendments—should be a red flag for voters.

Sharia and Security Concerns

The criticism goes beyond economics. El-Sayed has reportedly called following Sharia Law a personal ‘obligation’ and has opposed bans on its use in American courts, arguing that supporters of such bans are responsible for historical injustices like the Trail of Tears and the Tulsa massacre. The Daily Wire piece characterizes this as a distortion of legitimate constitutional concerns.

More alarming, according to the article, are El-Sayed’s ties to Islamist networks. His former security chief, Jordan Domingue, a Marine who protected El-Sayed across campaigns, resigned and publicly warned that El-Sayed holds ‘extreme Islamist-adjacent views,’ shows sympathy for positions that soft-pedal terrorist groups, and harbors deep anti-American sentiment. Domingue described El-Sayed as a ‘chameleon’ who practices ‘strategic ambiguity,’ particularly when discussing Iran’s regime or its proxies.

Additionally, a counterterrorism analyst testified at a recent Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing that El-Sayed’s family ties and campaign associations connect back to Muslim Brotherhood-linked networks and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

A Warning to Michigan

The Daily Wire commentary frames El-Sayed’s campaign as part of a broader erosion of liberal democracy, with the ‘red-green’ alliance seeking to normalize illiberalism through a combination of radical language and appeals to tolerance. The article cites examples such as amplified Islamic calls to prayer, teachers suspended for showing a historical Muhammad cartoon, and airport foot-washing stations, arguing that those who object are labeled ‘bigots.’

‘That’s the playbook, and El-Sayed is running it,’ the article states. It acknowledges that El-Sayed is not a card-carrying member of the Democratic Socialists of America, but argues that this is a deliberate loophole. ‘When you don’t believe in shared truth, when words are just tools and the Constitution is something you wipe your backside with, you get to call yourself a capitalist on Tuesday and a Jihai revolutionary on Wednesday.’

The piece concludes with a direct appeal to Michigan voters, invoking Hirsi Ali’s testimony: ‘Ayaan Hirsi Ali survived the real thing to warn us what it looks like when it’s coming. Michigan, consider yourselves warned.’

El-Sayed’s campaign has not responded to these allegations, and the candidate has previously dismissed such criticisms as smears. The Michigan Senate race remains competitive, with El-Sayed facing several opponents in the Democratic primary.
