Former NBA star Enes Kanter Freedom has thrown down a public challenge to the WNBA: sit down for a moderated “peace summit” on the league’s transgender athlete policy — and he’s already lined up Caitlyn Jenner to run the conversation.
In a video posted to X, Freedom addressed WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and the league’s task force directly, offering what he called a “peace summit” moderated by his “friend Caitlyn Jenner,” who, he said, has already agreed to take part.
“I’m not a troublemaker. I’m more of a peacemaker,” Freedom insisted in the clip, before adding that the league has become “a laughingstock” over its handling of the issue.
The offer comes weeks after Freedom announced his intention to enter the 2028 WNBA Draft, a move that prompted the league to rule him ineligible — without explaining why or how that decision was reached, according to the former NBA center.
Freedom said the league’s silence on its transgender policy is no longer tenable. “It’s time to stop hiding behind closed-door meetings, excuses, and delays and finally give the public a clear answer,” he said.
What Sparked the Challenge
The controversy traces back to Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham, who drew criticism from many in the league after publicly opposing the inclusion of men who claim to be women in women’s and girls’ sports. Freedom said Cunningham’s stance “spurred” his own decision to declare for the draft.
Now he’s pressing the league to defend its position in an open forum. “Let’s have the peace summit,” he said. “No shouting. No hiding. No carefully scripted statements.”
Freedom framed the proposed debate as a chance for the WNBA to finally explain its policy in plain terms. “Let’s sit across the table from each other, have an open and respectful conversation, and address the questions millions of people are asking,” he said.
He also challenged the league’s credibility: “The whole world is laughing at you. You have turned the #WNBA into a laughingstock.”
“Let’s put everything on the table and let the public hear both sides. If you truly believe in your position, you should have no problem defending it publicly,” he added.
The invitation, he said, is now officially on the table. “Name the time. Name the place. Let’s talk. Are you in?” he asked.
The WNBA has not yet publicly responded to Freedom’s offer, and it remains unclear whether Commissioner Engelbert or the league’s task force will take him up on the debate.
