Ex-Democratic Socialist William Lawrence Flips Michigan House Seat in Stunning Upset

Democrat William Lawrence toppled freshman Republican Rep. Tom Barrett in Michigan’s hotly contested 7th Congressional District, according to an Associated Press race call Wednesday, marking a significant pickup for Democrats in one of the nation’s most evenly divided swing seats.

With nearly all precincts reporting, Lawrence led Barrett 51% to 48% in the Lansing-anchored district that voted for Donald Trump by about one point in the 2024 presidential election. The victory flips a seat Republicans had held for just a single term after Barrett’s 4-point win in 2024.

A Grassroots Campaign Defies the Odds

Lawrence, a local organizer who co-founded the climate activist group Sunrise Movement, declared victory in an overnight social media post celebrating what he called an “unprecedented movement” powered by small-dollar donations and volunteers. “We showed that you can beat an incumbent Republican without taking a dime of corporate PAC money,” he wrote.

The win came despite being outspent by Barrett through the summer and facing relentless Republican attacks tying him to socialist policies. Lawrence let his Democratic Socialists of America membership lapse in July and distanced himself from the socialist label during the campaign, but Barrett’s team dismissed the move as insincere.

Republicans’ Socialist Attack Line Falls Short

Barrett, a 22-year Army veteran and former state senator, had made Lawrence’s progressive ties a centerpiece of his campaign. “Being a socialist should disqualify him for people’s consideration in my district,” Barrett said during the race. Outside GOP groups like the Club for Growth poured money into ads comparing Lawrence to New York’s far-left politicians.

But Lawrence’s focus on economic issues and grassroots organizing — backed by endorsements from Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Rashida Tlaib — ultimately overcame the socialist framing in the university-heavy district that includes Michigan State’s campus. The result extends a winning streak for candidates with DSA-aligned backgrounds following Zohran Mamdani’s New York City mayoral win last year.

The 7th District had been represented by Democrat Elissa Slotkin until her 2024 Senate run. Its swing back to Democratic hands gives the party a key foothold in Michigan ahead of the 2026 midterms.
