Fitness Is Now ‘Fascist’? Socialists at Chicago Conference Say Exercise Helps the Right

Fitness Is Now 'Fascist'? Socialists at Chicago Conference Say Exercise Helps the Right

At the Socialism 2026 Conference in Chicago, a speaker wearing a mask reportedly argued that socialists must reject the very idea of fitness, warning that embracing exercise would play directly into the hands of fascists. The remark, which has been circulating online, has ignited a fresh culture-war skirmish over the politics of personal health — and drawn sharp mockery from conservative commentators who say the left’s reflexive opposition to everyday American habits has reached a new absurdity.

Mike McDaniel, a Air Force veteran and lifelong athlete writing for American Thinker, described the conference scene with evident disbelief. He noted that the speaker was masked — in 2026 — and that nearly everyone at the event appeared to be wearing masks, a detail he interpreted as a longing for the COVID-19 lockdown era. For McDaniel, the juxtaposition of mask-wearing socialists dismissing fitness as a tool of the right was both baffling and revealing.

Exercise as a Political Act

‘Wow. I certainly don’t feel very fascistic when pumping iron or at the end of long, hard rides,’ McDaniel wrote. He went on to say that the view that promoting fitness is somehow racist or fascist is actually common on the left, part of a broader pattern where ‘Normal Americans’ who value physical health are reflexively opposed.

McDaniel, who described a lifetime of athletic pursuits — fencing, running, biking, and weights — said his own fitness helped him recover from knee and shoulder replacement surgeries. He acknowledges that exercise has become more essential as he has aged, given the ease of gaining weight and the difficulty of losing it. ‘Those are lessons they haven’t learned at the Socialism 2026 Conference,’ he quipped.

From Racism to Fascism

The idea that fighting obesity is ‘racist’ has been floating around progressive circles for years, and McDaniel argues the ‘fascist’ label is just the latest twist. He sarcastically noted that ‘what isn’t these days?’ when it comes to accusations of political incorrectness.

He also took a pointed jab at the speaker’s physical appearance, suggesting that someone who appears overweight and averse to exercise might be ‘prickly about their weight.’ The remark, while cutting, underscores his broader point that the conference’s message may be rooted more in personal resentment than political principle.

Socialists and the Worker’s Paradise

McDaniel goes further, characterizing socialists as either ‘larval Communists’ or ‘Communists hiding their true beliefs until the right moment.’ He argues that their rejection of fitness is part of a larger effort to control every aspect of human existence — including personal health and leisure.

He dismisses the notion that such a stance is self-defeating, noting that communist regimes have never truly cared about the welfare of workers. ‘They’ll get plenty of that in the mines, tank plants, reeducation camps, and gulags,’ he wrote, adding that such regimes demand fitness from their military forces but deny workers the time and resources for voluntary exercise.

In communist nations, McDaniel contends, only the elite get to be fat or fit — with access to food, medical care, anti-obesity drugs, and leisure time that ordinary workers are denied. ‘People who struggle every day for mere survival tend not to think very much about running marathons or riding centuries,’ he observed, adding that ‘the weaker you are, the heavier AK-47s get.’

A Call to Keep Moving

Despite his sarcasm, McDaniel strikes a personal note, vowing to continue exercising ‘as long and hard as I can.’ He says he’s determined not to become one of those elderly people who struggle to get out of a chair or lift a spoon.

He even finds a silver lining in the conference’s messaging, suggesting that the masked socialists are doing a public service by revealing their intentions. ‘They’re hoping we’ll be too weak to shoot our way out,’ he wrote — a particularly loaded comment from a man who is also a firearm instructor.

The American Thinker piece, a blog post from September 8, 2026, is part of a broader conservative critique of leftist health messaging, which has intensified in the wake of public health campaigns and political debates around obesity, lockdowns, and individual autonomy.

Whether the ‘fitness is fascist’ claim represents a fringe view or a growing sentiment on the left remains a matter of debate. But for McDaniel, it’s yet another example of a political movement that seems determined to oppose — and undermine — the everyday habits that keep Americans healthy, strong, and free.
