Robert Murphy Jr., the former director of sports medicine at North Carolina State University, was arrested in Florida on Wednesday after a North Carolina grand jury indicted him on 32 charges of sexual abuse, according to reports.
The 54-year-old Murphy was taken into custody on September 23, following an indictment that includes nine felony counts of “sexual contact under the guise of medical treatment.” The remaining 23 charges are misdemeanor sexual battery, TMZ Sports reported.
A Decade at NC State
Murphy spent ten years as NC State’s sports medicine chief before resigning in 2022, just before he would have been fired. The controversy surrounding his tenure erupted publicly when soccer player Ben Locke filed a criminal complaint against him over abuse that Locke alleged began as far back as 2015.
After Locke came forward, other athletes—most of them male—began to share similar accounts of abuse at Murphy’s hands, according to the reporting.
Civil Lawsuits Mount
In addition to the criminal charges, Murphy faces a wave of 31 lawsuits filed by male athletes, most of whom are proceeding under the pseudonym “John Doe.” Those suits also allege sexual abuse.
Murphy is currently being held in the Marion County Jail in Florida. He is awaiting transfer to Wake County, North Carolina, where he will face the charges brought in the indictment.
The case remains under investigation, and authorities have not indicated whether additional charges could follow.
