German authorities have publicly acknowledged that the violent Halloween riots that erupted in Frankfurt on October 31st were predominantly carried out by individuals with migrant backgrounds, working in conjunction with far-left activists.
The admission comes after a night of widespread destruction that left 17 shops damaged, five looted, and approximately 100 police officers injured — including one seriously. Despite estimates that between 1,000 and 1,500 violent rioters participated in the unrest, only 54 arrests have been made so far.
Interior Minister Breaks ‘Taboo’ on Riot Demographics
Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck addressed the riots directly, acknowledging what he described as a sensitive topic in German politics. “Tonight’s events must have clear consequences. This group of perpetrators was predominantly of migrant background. And we must address that as well,” Poseck stated, according to Die Welt. “There can be no false taboos here.”
The arrested suspects ranged in age from 13 to 29 years old, authorities reported. Poseck announced the formation of a special commission to investigate the events while pledging increased attention to migrant communities at future demonstrations.
“I want to make it very clear: In doing so, we are also protecting the many people with a migration background in our country who abide by the law,” Poseck said. “I must say that what I saw deeply shocked me. This cannot continue. We cannot surrender the country to those who act with such violence against our police.”

Violence Concentrated in Major Shopping District
Police reported that they had “completely cordoned off the Zeil shopping street,” one of Germany’s most prominent shopping areas. Despite these precautions, multiple businesses suffered looting, including a gun store.
Law enforcement officers came under attack with Molotov cocktails during the street battles, mirroring tactics used in recent riots in Paris. The situation escalated to the point that the Special Operations Unit had to be deployed to support regular police forces.
Part of Nationwide ‘Gen Z Regulate’ Movement
The Frankfurt riots occurred alongside nationwide protests that drew an estimated 120,000 people to the streets in 30 German cities on Saturday. The demonstrations were part of the so-called “Gen Z regulate” protests, a movement that has been spreading across Europe.
While many daytime demonstrations remained peaceful, violence erupted in multiple cities after dark. Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, and Stuttgart all witnessed violent scenes that forced police to deploy dispersal methods including water cannons in some locations.
Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt characterized the violence as a hijacking of legitimate protests. “Violent left-wing groups and troublemakers from the migrant community hijacked the peaceful demonstrations from the afternoon last night,” Dobrindt said. “The rioters and looters will be identified and held accountable. This breach of the peace must be met with harsh punishments.”

Political Backlash and Immigration Debate
The riots have intensified political debate in Germany, particularly around migration policy and public order. The opposition Alternative for Germany party has seized on the events to criticize the governing coalition.
Robert Lambrou, leader of the AfD in the Hessian State Parliament, called the violence “appalling” and issued what he termed “an urgent appeal to the CDU/CSU-SPD coalition to finally take a closer look at left-wing extremists and migrant violence.”
“It is obvious that this also involves unresolved problems with migration,” Lambrou added.
The violence in Frankfurt has drawn particular attention due to the city’s demographics. Frankfurt has been so significantly transformed by migration that it now functions as a minority-majority city, where no single ethnic group constitutes a majority of the population.
Emerging Pattern Across Europe
German authorities noted similarities between the Frankfurt riots and recent unrest in France, where an alliance between radical left-wing activists and youth from migrant backgrounds has become increasingly apparent during protests and demonstrations.
The pattern of violence — including attacks on police with incendiary devices, coordinated looting, and street battles lasting hours — has raised concerns among law enforcement about the potential for similar events in other major European cities with large migrant populations.
As investigations continue, authorities face pressure to balance public safety concerns with Germany’s complex political sensitivities around immigration and integration. The special commission announced by Minister Poseck is expected to deliver findings in the coming weeks that could shape future policing strategies for large demonstrations.
