Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) sharpened his criticism of the Trump administrationâs handling of the military, saying on Sunday that President Donald Trump views servicemembers as âtoysâ and props to project strength rather than as human beings with families and stakes in the consequences of war.
Appearing on ABCâs âThis Week,â Gallego, a Marine Corps veteran, took aim at both the president and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, arguing that a âdeep, deep, deep mistrustâ of leadership has taken hold among troops and their families as the administration grapples with an ongoing conflict.
Lack of Planning Cited
Gallegoâs remarks came in response to a question about the administrationâs handling of the war, though the specific conflict was not named in the clip. He expressed frustration that the administration appeared to be resolving issues only after they escalated, asking, âwhere was the leadership for so long that it got to this point?â
He noted that he had spoken with a military spouse just three days prior, underscoring that the problems are current and immediate, not relics of a past administration.
âThis administration did not plan for this war,â Gallego said. âThey did not plan how to get out of this war, did not really understand how this war was going to escalate. They were basically trying and hoping that this war would end up just like the war in Venezuela.â
The senator argued that U.S. troops are now âsuffering the consequencesâ of that lack of foresight.
Hegseth Under Fire
Gallego did not hold back in his assessment of the Defense Secretary, asserting that Hegseth is âabsolutely not qualified to be leading the Department of Defense.â
His comments add to a growing chorus of Democratic criticism of Hegseth, who has faced scrutiny over his experience and management style since taking the helm at the Pentagon.
Gallego, who served in Iraq, has frequently positioned himself as a voice for servicemembers and veterans in the Senate, often crossing the aisle on military issues. But his latest remarks reflect a deepening partisan divide over the administrationâs national security posture.
Trump Accused of Indifference
The senatorâs most pointed critique was reserved for the president, whom he accused of a âlackadaisical attitudeâ toward the men and women in uniform and their deployments.
âHe just doesnât really care about the troops,â Gallego said. âHe thinks about them more as toys and as ways to basically show off or show its strength, but not the fact that they truly, at the end of the day, are humans. Theyâre Americans. And they have families, and these things, these deployments, these wars have consequences.â
Those comments echo a broader narrative from Democrats who have accused Trump of treating the military as a political prop, a charge that has intensified as the administration has leaned into displays of military might.
Political Ramifications
Gallegoâs remarks are likely to reverberate in the political arena, particularly as he positions himself as a key Democratic voice on military affairs. His willingness to attack the administration on national security could energize Democratic base voters, but it also risks alienating moderate voters who may view the criticism as overly harsh.
Republicans, for their part, have defended the administrationâs handling of military matters, pointing to efforts to modernize the force and confront global threats.
The White House has not yet responded to Gallegoâs comments, but the administration has consistently pushed back against accusations that it has mismanaged the military or shown indifference to troops.
As the war continues and the human toll mounts, the debate over leadership and planning is likely to remain a central fixture in the political discourse.
