Former New York City Mayor and Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani told former CBS correspondent Lara Logan that by the time he went to sleep on the night of January 6, 2021, he had already concluded what the day’s events amounted to — and on Saturday, at the premiere of American Martyrs in West Palm Beach, Florida, he said so publicly.
According to a Gateway Pundit account of the event, Giuliani told Logan he did not need the House select committee, a federal prosecutor, or years of cable coverage to reach his conclusion.
“By the time I went to sleep on the evening of January 6th, I knew exactly what was going on,” Giuliani said, per the outlet. “I knew exactly that it was a fixed operation.”
A question for Bernard Kerik
Logan, who moderated the conversation, pressed Giuliani on the security posture at the Capitol that day. Per Gateway Pundit’s reporting, she recounted calling Bernard Kerik — the former NYPD commissioner who worked alongside Giuliani on the 2020 election challenges — and posing what she framed as a purely operational question: if you were tasked with securing the Capitol that day, what would you have done?
Kerik’s answer, Logan said, was immediate: mounted officers ringing the building on horseback. One mounted officer, he told her, is worth roughly three officers on foot.
Gateway Pundit’s account states that leaked footage, filmed by Nancy Pelosi’s daughter and reported on by Fox News, showed the then-Speaker saying “I take responsibility” after the security breakdown, and that the White House later documented Pelosi turning down 10,000 National Guard troops that President Trump had offered in advance.
The outlet further notes that former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund has said he placed 11 urgent calls requesting the Guard beginning at 12:58 p.m. and waited 71 minutes for approval from the House Sergeant at Arms, who reported to Pelosi.
Giuliani names Obama
Asked by Logan what indicators led him to view January 6 as an operation, Giuliani pointed away from the day itself and toward former President Barack Obama. He said he agrees “completely with General Flynn” that the person responsible for “the darkest hours in American history is Barack Obama.”
“You know how they talk about an Antichrist? He’s an anti-president,” Giuliani said. “And I believe now all the things that I thought were exaggerated way back then, I believe he was flagrant.”
He characterized the effort as “part of the communist plan… to overthrow us.”
Giuliani’s claim, as relayed in the Gateway Pundit account, is a characterization rather than a finding by any court or investigative body. Multiple reviews of the January 6 attack have attributed the security collapse to failures across agencies, and none has concluded the event was a staged or manufactured operation.

The alternate-elector fight and ‘trial by combat’
Giuliani also described his own role that week. He said he was still serving as Trump’s impeachment lawyer and still working to persuade Vice President Mike Pence to pause the certification count. Four state legislatures had written to Pence asking him to wait, Giuliani said, describing the Georgia and Pennsylvania submissions as “ironclad,” Arizona’s as “very, very cozy,” and Wisconsin’s as “a completely illegal election.”
On Wisconsin, he walked through the absentee-affidavit requirement in state law — no affidavit, he said, means the vote is canceled — and argued that voiding those ballots would have flipped the state to Trump. He dismissed as “absurd” the Wisconsin Supreme Court’s conclusion that the penalty was too harsh.
On Pennsylvania, Giuliani said roughly 900,000 ballots were counted without a Republican inspector able to meaningfully observe, because a single Republican in a room “the size of a basketball arena” was treated as though he could watch a count occurring across the floor.
“One judge, the Republican, voted and said, you’re really reducing him to a potted plant,” Giuliani said, calling the outcome “an absurd decision.”
Giuliani said he had not been scheduled to speak at the Ellipse rally and was instead focused on the legislatures. He described the Pennsylvania majority leader as initially hostile — scheduling Giuliani’s first hearing in the suburbs so “nobody would hear us” — before calling him later and saying, “This is an outrage. They stole a million votes.”
“Pence. The terrible vice president,” Giuliani said, according to the account. “Pence just disregarded it.”
That morning, Giuliani said, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows called to say the president wanted constitutional scholar John Eastman to explain that the alternate-elector concept was not an invention, citing its use in the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon contest. Meadows’ concern, Giuliani recalled, was that Eastman “doesn’t speak English, he speaks lawyer” — and the president wanted Giuliani on hand to translate.
Giuliani and Eastman arrived early, he said, and stood on the cold stage for hours before Giuliani delivered the line that would follow him for years: “Why don’t we have the machines? I’ll take the machine that I analyzed, you take your machine, Dominion. Let’s have a trial by combat.”
An “Obama judge,” Giuliani said, later dismissed the case against him over that remark, calling it ridiculous.
Afterward, he said, he went home to his compound and kept working the states with Kerik’s investigative team — six states in all — still pressing Pence for a delay of the kind he said Thomas Jefferson once used.
The film at the center of Saturday’s event, American Martyrs, is now available to watch online, with its official site listing digital access at a limited promotional price of $9.99, down from a stated regular price of $14.99.
